"Viann and Isabelle have always been close despite their differences. Younger, bolder sister Isabelle lives in Paris while Viann lives a quiet and content life in the French countryside with her husband Antoine and their daughter. When World War II strikes and Antoine is sent off to fight, Viann and Isabelle's father sends Isabelle to help her older sister cope. As the war progresses, it's not only the sisters' relationship that is tested, but also their strength and their individual senses of right and wrong. With life as they know it changing in unbelievably horrific ways, Viann and Isabelle will find themselves facing frightening situations and responding in ways they never thought possible as bravery and resistance take different forms in each of their actions. Vivid and exquiste in its illumination of a time and place that was filled with great monstrosities, but also great humanity and strength, Kristin Hannah's novel will provoke thought and discussion that will have readers talking long after they turn the last page"--… (mais)

There was so many emotions throughout reading this novel. I was crying by the end and was overwhelmed with everything I was feeling. I had to take a day before being able to write this fully.

This surprisingly lived up to the hype. I was so nervous about reading it because I didn't want this to crash and burn for me. This actually exceeded my expectations on so many levels.

The writing was beautiful. She managed to capture every emotion that people felt through World War II. This time period is one of horrors but she brought out the love, bitterness, and strength that these people had. The journey and roller coaster that I experienced with Isabelle and Vianne is one that will stay with me.

That time period was horrific and this does remind us that we never want to go back to that. Kristin Hannah also brought to life another story that we might not have never known. When discussing this period, all you hear is the big countries are doing to fight for or against but never smaller sections of these countries that are being occupied or destroyed. This is fiction but it reminds everyone that there was men and women who risked everything to protect neighbors, family, and even complete strangers. ( )

While the story is certainly a wealth of information on how things were in France prior to and during WWII, I felt that the book's arc was pretty formulaic so that once I got through the War I didn't need to finish the last thirty pages.

Entertaining story, but the depth of the characters wasn't what I had hoped it would be. ( )

I did not want to like this book, but the more pages I read, the more I loved it. I knew very little about the Occupation of France by the Nazis. I feel I know just a little more now of the heroism of women in WWII. ( )

If I had told him the truth long ago, or had danced and drunk and sung more, maybe he would have seen me instead of a dependable, ordinary mother. He loves a version of me that is incomplete. I always thought it was what I wanted: to be loved and admired. Now I think perhaps I'd like to be known.
