Lila is charmed by the people of Auburn, from the blue-eyed lawyer with the southern drawl to the little old lady who unceasingly tries to set Lila up with her grandson. But when strange things begin to happen, Lila realizes some of her new friends are guarding a secret like its a precious family heirloom. It's a dangerous secret, and it has come back to haunt them. Lila Moore, goes home to the house she has inherited from her grandfather. But what secrets does this small town hold. ( )
  Vesper1931 | Jul 29, 2021 |
Lila Moore had been taking care of her Grandpa the last couple of years. He had just passed away and left her his home in the small Midwestern town of Auburn. Vacant for year, it is in need of repairs, if Lila is to put it on the market or live in it.
Lila grew up with just her Mom and has never really experiences having a family. I Auburn, her Aunt Ada is her neighbour and who she lives with until the house is inhabitable. Ada starts filling Lila in with family history that is common knowledge and also some of the family secrets. In her search for family history, Lila is faced with unearthing the buried secrets and stories.
This is more of a story of Lila discovering who she is, what she can do and what a strong woman she really is.
The title refers to a group that gets together and collect and discuss obituaries published in the local newspapers. It may sound morbid, but isn’t when you realize an obituary is a write-up of a person’s life — accomplishments, who they were, where their roots come from and what their legacy is.
Lila finds she is torn between staying or selling the house, taking the money going back to flat life she was living. She also finds herself with two very different men interested in her. Something she’s never really had.
This is a good read about life in a small town where people live for generations, life moves at a slower pace, neighbours help each other, keep secrets about each other and know everyone’s family history. A cozy with a good dash of supernatural and the unexpected. ( )

A young woman returns to her Grandfather's hometown for his funeral and to decide what to do with his home there that she has inherited.

There is so much subtle love written in this book - love for small towns, love (and acceptance) for the older community, love for the simpler way of life.

There is mystery, and just a touch of the supernatural, but there is absolutely nothing in this book that should offend any sensitive reader - no foul language, no erotic scenes, no gore. Just an extremely comfortable read with interesting characters and a bit of romance.

I agree with another reviewer and would love to see a sequel. ( )

Fun, if predictable, cozy mystery with a sprinkling of ghost story added.

When Lila Moore's grandfather dies, she returns to his original home town for the funeral and to take possession of the old house left to her in his will.

The small-town atmosphere, complete with a quartet of little old ladies who trade gossip and obituaries with equal fervor but who guard their recipes like lipstick-wearing pit bulls, are fun background. There's a romance, and a precocious little girl, and a family "mystery" that most readers will see through immediately.

But it's a fast, fun read. You won't sprain your brain looking for deep literary undercurrents here, and if you can forgive Randall for not attempting to explain (or expand on) the supernatural thread, you'll enjoy it. She does, however, lose points for not finding someone to proofread the manuscript who knows the difference between "its" and "it's"; "who's" and "whose"; "retched" and "wretched", and other pesky homophones.

Probably self-published, and apparently the start of a series. ( )
