Follows a Viet Cong agent as he spies on a South Vietnamese army general and his compatriots as they start a new life in 1975 Los Angeles."It is April 1975, and Saigon is in chaos. At his villa, a general of the South Vietnamese army is drinking whiskey and, with the help of his trusted captain, drawing up a list of those who will be given passage aboard the last flights out of the country. The general and his compatriots start a new life in Los Angeles, unaware that one among their number, the captain, is secretly observing and reporting on the group to a higher-up in the Viet Cong. The Sympathizer is the story of this captain: a man brought up by an absent French father and a poor Vietnamese mother, a man who went to university in America, but returned to Vietnam to fight for the Communist cause. A gripping spy novel, an astute exploration of extreme politics, and a moving love story, The Sympathizer explores a life between two worlds and examines the legacy of the Vietnam War in literature, film, and the wars we fight today"--Amazon.com.… (mais)

Our unnamed narrator begins with the fall of Saigon and the escape of South Vietnamese refugees to America, where he lives and works while working as a spy for the Viet Cong.

This is a book in which no single word is wasted, its meaning important and often double, beginning with the title itself. The narrator is a sympathizer both as a spy but also in his self - he is the son of a French priest and a Vietnamese woman, and is not one or the other. The unique perspective of an outsider allows him to sympathize with both sides, leaving you unsure exactly how much to trust his narration, a confession he is making to the Commandant. Equally brilliantly executed and brutal in its descriptions of war and the aftermath, this Pulitzer Prize-winning title is deserving a careful, slow read. Would I reread it? No. But I'm in awe of the author's way with words, and would definitely recommend it for book clubs or read another by him. ( )

The narrator is a north Vietnamese communist agent working for the South's secret police, then living in the USA. He is a spy, a revolutionary, a counter-insurgent but also a Western-educated, literary man who enjoys Western vices. His life is full of contradictions, hidden truths and betrayals. This is a spy story, but also a prison story, a refugee story and a reflection on his country's fate. Insightful, though I found the section about the Movie a bit of a slow point. ( )

Extraordinary writing, intense and fascinating story. ( )

I picked this up after reading mopie's recommendation. It is very well written and I am interested in the time setting. But the predominant emotions are suspicion, alienation and occasional trauma. Those are appropriate for the story but I found I didn't want to stay on the whole ride. I'll have to try some nonfiction about post war Viet Nam.

So, I read this book with a few long breaks because of some health issues and I'm not sure if that had an effect on my feelings about it, but I ended up really enjoying the first two-thirds of the book and looking forward to a great conclusion, but feeling like I didn't get that. The last part of the book got way to metaphysical for me and frankly I just didn't enjoy it. It may well have been Mr. Nguyen's intention and it certainly is a valid way to write this book, but it did not work for me. The book up until then was a nuanced portrait of someone always seeming to be caught in between and how he manages to navigate life. I was caught between 3 and 4 stars but the book is definitely well written and I'm not sorry I read it, so 4 stars it is. I just didn't get the ending I wanted. Maybe it was the ending that was deserved however. ( )

...The Sympathizer is an excellent literary novel, and one that ends, with unsettling present-day resonance, in a refugee boat where opposing ideas about intentions, actions and their consequences take stark and resilient human form.

The more powerful a country is, the more disposed its people will be to see it as the lead actor in the sometimes farcical, often tragic pageant of history. So it is that we, citizens of a superpower, have viewed the Vietnam War as a solely American drama in which the febrile land of tigers and elephants was mere backdrop and the Vietnamese mere extras.

Très beau roman qui raconte le parcours d’un agent secret Viêt-Cong infiltré côté américain pendant la guerre du Vietnam. L’action débute au moment de l’évacuation des troupes américaines et des Vietnamiens collaborateurs.

Let us not become gloomy as soon as we hear the word "torture": in this particular case there is plenty to offset and mitigate that word--even something to laugh at.
