First in the Farmer trilogy.

When a circus train passes by an isolated farm, a child clown falls off. The farmer takes care of him, and the clown teaches the farmer a few tricks before returning to the circus when the train passes by again the next day.

The palette is somewhat moody and restrained, excepted for the bright red of the clown's suit and pointed red hat. The farm animals - cows and chickens - watch the new visitor with interest. ( )

stunning illustrations -- such a tender story and the tonality of color and artistic style supported the emotional nuances of the tale ( )

A wordless book by Marla Frazee?? Be still my heart!! I will confess that this woman has never done a doodle I didn't like. I've always thought that her talent really shows in small vignetttes- she can tell a whole story in a facial expression- and that really shows here (even when the expression is painted on!). The pacing is wonderful: she varies double-page, full-bleed spreads with single ones, with series of small moments in quick succession. The flap copy says that it's a story about home, but I think it's a story about sadness, both shown and with a happy painted exterior, and how friends can help each other find happiness. The final illustration was such a relief, as I was feeling very sorry for the farmer, and I didn't notice the hat switch until my second read.

Really, the only problem is that Marla Frazee lives in California and we can't be best friends. ( )

The Farmer and the Clown is a wordless picture book that demonstrates the growth of a new relationship. I give this wordless picture book a 5/5 because students can learn how to help one another out by looking at how the farmer and the clown became friends. The farmer decided to take the clown under his care when the clown was separated from his family. Students can see how an act of kindness can change a person’s day and/or life. After viewing this wordless picture book, students can reflect on how they can do an act of kindness in their daily lives. Additionally, students can use the characters facial expressions to figure out what is happening in the story. For example, the clown had his face painted as a happy face when he was with his family and met the farmer. When the clown got separated from his family and the farmer took the paint off from the clown’s face, the clown’s real face was sad. Students can figure out the cause of the clown’s sadness by connecting it to the clown’s separation from his family. ( )
