Rosemary Harper doesn't expect much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days, it offers her a bed, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and most importantly, some distance from her past. An introspective young woman, she's never met anyone remotely like the ship's diverse crew, including Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot, chatty engineers Kizzy and Jenks, who keep the ship running, and Ashby, their noble captain. Life aboard the Wayfarer is chaotic and crazy-exactly what Rosemary wants. It's also about to get extremely dangerous when the crew is offered the job of a lifetime. Tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet is definitely lucrative and will keep them comfortable for years. But risking her life wasn't part of the plan. In the far reaches of deep space, the tiny Wayfarer crew will confront a host of unexpected mishaps and thrilling adventures that force them to depend on each other. To survive, Rosemary's got to learn how to rely on this assortment of oddballs-an experience that teaches her about love and trust, and that having a family isn't necessarily the worst thing in the universe.… (mais)

The Empress of Salt and Fortune por Nghi Vo (andreas.wpv)
andreas.wpv: The book is really different in story and in setting. Empress is high fantasy - but barely visible, and tells a story of a story being collected from the maidservant of an empress. While the story is so different, the mood and feel of the story, and the telling of the story are similar - a tender loving observation of human beings living their lives together in non-ordinary circumstances. I have not read the next books of the 'empress' - so not sure this holds, but to me, they are so similar.… (mais)

This book was a mixed bag. One thing I did get from it is that I have to stop relying on io9 for book recommendations, at least from new authors.

Well, that's not entirely fair. I did read about Leviathan Wakes on the site, and that turned out to be a series of winners in ways this book could only dream of being. Here, though, I get chunks of pedantry, of didacticism so thick I felt like I was back in Sunday school or reading about Goofus and Gallant waiting to see the dentist.

Whenever you have characters regularly taking time to have conversations about the failings of human kind (fair enough), and saying in no uncertain terms how their choices are better than those of history, it's just too much. And that is really disappointing, because the book was otherwise not bad. It was an interesting enough conceit, and I generally like space operas, but this was a little too soap opera-y and I can only conclude it was because the author had an agenda. The result is a book that is entirely too clunky and clumsy to truly enjoy. I swear, by the time they got to a conversation that was too obviously about vaccinations, I'd just had it. Fortunately, it was near the end of the book.

It's not about the politics the author espoused, either, as they generally hued closely to my own. But the best literature, and certainly the best genre fiction, addresses social issues obliquely; it allows the reader to realize something bigger is being discussed, or optionally to not realize it at all and still enjoy a good story. I felt at times like there was going to be a quiz later, and it spoiled so much. ( )

Rosemary Harper spends all her money on a new identity to escape her past, leaving her with little left to afford transportation and sleep drugs for his rendezvous with the spaceship, Wayfarer, where she was hired by Captain Ashby as ship's clerk. She joins an existing crew consisting of humans: Captain Ashby, Corbin the algae expert (fuel for the ship), Jenks and Kizzy, eccentric technicians, Sissix, a reptilian, Dr. Chef, a six-appendaged Grum (chef and doctor), and a Sinat Pair called Ohan, whose skill enables them to navigate through wormholes, and my favorite character, Lovey, the ship's AI. Author Becky Chambers has created a wonderful cast of multidimensional characters, whose interactions and relationships grow and morph throughout the events in the novel. Complex issues are plumbed, such as prejudice, justice, aggression, love, hatred, truth, sacrifice, morality, family. A very engrossing read, which I enjoyed. 4.5 stars. ( )

Author is very creative designing different cultures and galactic species. Take on humans is pretty right on. Definitely for younger readers, but intriguing nonetheless. Her character development is very good. Plot gets bogged down in "love affairs" for me. ( )

Where is the The Long Way Fan Club and where do I sign up? Seriously, I couldn't have picked a more perfect book to travel with. It made me itch to race to my next lull in activity so I could jump back in with these most lovable characters on and off the Wayfarer. Yes, even Corbin's lovable and that scene at the end where Dr. Chef starts preparing food for Ohan TOTALLY made me get all sniffly on the plane. I want to nuzzle this book like an Aandrisk. Get a round of kick for everyone. Feed it fire shrimp. Flash all my Aeluon love colors at it. And probably read it again here soon, just to get my fix again. So much fun.
