This is an excellent book that I wish more librarians would pick up and absorb. Our profession is changing and I feel that many of the paths forward are illustrated in this book. It's not just about data science, it's about the profession as a whole.

It even includes a description of librarianship that I have typed up and posted in my office:

"I am a librarian and I am here to help you find high quality information from citable sources that will add credibility to your work."

I requested this book as part of the Early Reviewers program because data keeps being talked about in library-land. Unfortunately this book is geared so far towards the corporate librarian world that very little of it would be easy to apply in an academic library setting. There's one chapter about tools to get started playing with data that will be useful, but much of the book I ended up skimming.

This small but informative books is a must read for those in or going into the profession. An excellent review of the use of data to locate information based on the newest applications. If I were still teaching library management courses with would be a textbook that I would use and keep. It reflects this reviews ideas that librarians are still important in the field of information. The use of the information will make our jobs easier and more secure. Recommended. (

Another installment in the “Accidental Librarian” series of quick-start guides, this volume explores the scary-sounding world of “Big Data”. Data collection, analysis, and preservation are critical skills in the current economy. Affelt discusses how this state came about, tools of the trade, the purpose (and examples) of such work, and how librarians can position themselves to demonstrate value in this developing field--without the technical talk that makes turning information into answers so intimidating for beginners.

Librarians can't possibly be relevant now that we all have e-readers, right? This book is aimed at coaxing librarians into the digital age, but it is interesting as well for its examples of big data searches in multiple fields. A portion of the book is devoted to what the librarian's new title should be - those are skimmable for readers more interested in the data applications. This is one book that puts some specifics to the Big Data buzz of the current day. (
