This book is about a young girl named Mazie who talks about celebrating Juneteenth and that her ancestor are no longer slaves. She talks about the struggle that they faced but also the good things. In the classroom this would be good to talk about Juneteenth and the history of it. Juneteenth for Mazie is a great children’s multicultural book that introduces the topic of slavery in an age-appropriate way for young readers. This story helps readers to better understand how certain groups of people were not treated fairly and why this was wrong. The assuring tone of the story helps readers understand how important these events were and are to society today. The illustrations are colored with soft browns, blues, and yellows, to create the feeling of being in the past and seeing history right before the reader’s eyes. This book taught me the importance of June 19th, 1865 and how that day was celebrated as the end of the Civil War and slavery. I think this book is an excellent way for families and teachers to help their children and students learn about the history of the United States. I would love to see how discussions amongst different ages react to this book. Overall I would highly recommend this book in every classroom as a read-aloud and discussion book amongst all young learners. Even as an adult I felt that this book taught me something and made me want to learn about the time period discussed in the story. This book is a quick explanation of a the fight for freedom from slavery to the civil rights movement. It explains the holiday Juneteenth. This is a holiday that celebrates the ride of Union soldiers to Galveston to announce the freeing of slaves. The book also covers the civil rights movement and the fight for equal rights.
