Entertaining enough ( ) This was an interesting and in depth study of the seedy underworld of fraud of some of the most well-known masters. Art fraud arrives in many ways, those who study well noted works of art in museums, galleries, and private owners. It was noted by the former head of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, NY that it well may be that approximately 40% of works of art in museums may be frauds. I found it interesting how well known curators knew there is a smooth-running underbelly of scams, some of which were paintings that were sold for millions at famous institutions who laud these fake works as the gavel hits after bids for higher and higher amounts. Amore does a very good job of discussing the overarching issues of art forgery and fakery through specific cases throughout the modern age. Covering everything from the use of ebay to the purchase of old canvases at flea markets, forged signatures to expansive lies surrounding provenance, Amore creates a really interesting and comprehensive read. I didn't think that half of the art fraud methods in this book even existed until I read this book. It's eleven chapters of very disturbing con men and women scamming innocent museums, artists and buyers. Each chapter has a different story and technique used to sell fraudulent art. The scale that people will go to and the lies that they tell to make people believe it is astonishing. Just the fact that there is an entire book on art fraud is a clue. The chapters are relatively short, or they seem short because each is this own individual story. Amore keeps the reader excited too, he tells the facts but keeps it from being too dry. It's a very good book, worth at least a look or maybe purchasing it on Kindle. I bought my copy at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum where Anthony M. Amore works as Director of Security. It is also a signed copy. Great for people how are interested in nonfiction art mysteries. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica

"Art scams are today so numerous that the specter of a lawsuit arising from a mistaken attribution has scared a number of experts away from the business of authentication, and with good reason. Art scams are increasingly convincing and involve incredible sums of money. The cons perpetrated by unscrupulous art dealers and their accomplices are proportionately elaborate. The Art of the Con tells the stories of some of history's most notorious yet untold cons. They involve stolen art hidden for decades; elaborate ruses that involve the Nazis and allegedly plundered art; the theft of a conceptual prototype from a well-known artist by his assistant to be used later to create copies; the use of online and television auction sites to scam buyers out of millions; and other confidence scams incredible not only for their boldness but more so because they actually worked. Using interviews and newly released court documents, The Art of the Con will also take the reader into the investigations that led to the capture of the con men, who oftentimes return back to the world of crime. For some, it's an irresistible urge because their innocent dupes all share something in common: they want to believe"-- Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |
