The Internet isn't all cat videos. There's also Felicia Day -- violinist, filmmaker, Internet entrepreneur, compulsive gamer, hoagie specialist, and former lonely homeschooled girl who overcame her isolated childhood to become the ruler of a new world... or at least semi-influential in the world of Internet Geeks and Goodreads book clubs. After growing up in the south where she was "homeschooled for hippie reasons", Felicia moved to Hollywood to pursue her dream of becoming an actress and was immediately typecast as a crazy cat-lady secretary. But Felicia's misadventures in Hollywood led her to produce her own web series, own her own production company, and become an Internet star. Felicia's short-ish life and her rags-to-riches rise to Internet fame launched her career as one of the most influential creators in new media. Now Felicia's strange world is filled with thoughts on creativity, video games, and a dash of mild feminist activism -- just like her memoir. Felicia's story demonstrates that everyone should embrace what makes them different and be brave enough to share it with the world, because anything is possible now -- even for a digital misfit.… (mais)

I've been a fan of Felicia Day for an embarrassingly long time. Buffy, The Guild, Geek & Sundry, Dollhouse, Eureka -- and of course Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Her memoir increased my respect for her even more. She majored in math and violin? That's crazy dedication right there. Hearing her stories of meeting people from the online world mirrored some of my experiences at the time. The build up to starting The Guild was enlightening to hear about as well. It's easy to see something that's created and assume the path was easy. Knowing just how uphill and scrappy a battle it was is inspiring for me in my own creative endeavors. ( )

What I like best about a memoir like this one is that it is ultimately a happy story. There are personal tragedies and struggles in the author's life (as in everyone's), but she has successfully coped and grown through them to reach a pretty nice way of being. She doesn't have a silver bullet to solve all the reader's problems, but she's a pretty good role model. ( )

I'd go 3.5 if that was an option.

I've always liked Felicia Day. Well, since I first saw her on Dr. Horrible and then crushed on her after watching The Guild. My crush waned, and wasn't rekindled by this book. I enjoyed hearing the author read to me - I think all memoirs should be read by the author, if possible - because I don't think anyone else could have done it justice.

I learned a lot about Ms. Day and had quite a few, "wow, I never would have guessed that," moments. Glad I read it. I wish her loads of success and happiness in the future. ( )

I just could not finish this. The lol-speak and cringeworthy writing style really turned me off, which is too bad, because I’ve been wanting to read this for a while. I got maybe 1/3 of the way through and realized that I just didn’t care what came next and was kind of exhausted by the whole “I am the creator of the manic pixie geek girl who’s smart and funny genre” vibe. For anyone who has ever felt that they don't belong or who is looking to forge a career in online entertainment, this book is a must-read.

It’s a memoir of sorts, chronicling Day’s life from her homeschooled childhood to her violin-prodigy college years to trying, and eventually succeeding, at making it in Hollywood.

Felicia Day's memoir You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) starts off as a cute, snarky story about how a quirky upbringing turned Day into a nerd superhero; by the end, it's become an illuminating, frank look at the commercial realities, injustices and insecurities that everyone trying to earn a living online must confront.

The last sliver of her memoir contains powerful stuff. If only she had dug as deep for the rest of the book, it might have been a real winner.

For my mom, who is kooky and unique and taught me to be both these things and more. Even though my childhood wasn't "normal," she did her best to help me become who I am, and I love her for it.
