Lukis Singleton's once-popular sports column is fading fast, thanks to the terrible track record of the local football team. In an attempt to save the column, Lukis's editor, John, decides he needs to go in a different direction. Video games are all the rage these days, so John insists that sending Lukis to a huge video-game tournament in Los Angeles will shake up his current readers and bring in new ones. Lukis isn't thrilled about reporting on games with impossible powers or gamers who still live in Mom's basement, but then he meets a tempting flaw in the gaming stereotypes of unwashed man-children. Aaron Sanders is a gorgeous breath of fresh air at the tournament who takes Lukis's less-than-stellar view of gamers and turns it on its head, leaving Lukis to wonder if it might be worth being Aaron's player two.… (mais)

This is a delightful story, a look into the hitherto unknown and much disdained world of video games for the main character, and a journey of discovery not just of a different way of life, but a new lover at the same time. I simply loved the humorous tone of the writing, the series of prejudices that was simply obliterated, and seeing an "old"-in-mind, somewhat rigid character like Lukis come to life? A total joy!

Lukis is a mostly successful columnist close to his fortieth birthday, a sports journalist, and a man with a definite chip on his shoulder. Only football will do as a sport (well, there are others, but they aren't half as interesting), the fact that his team is on a losing streak is annoying but doesn't mean he has to do something else, and his editor must be mental to demand he cover some video game tournament. That isn't even a sport - is it? Why is he supposed to write about it in his column? How in the world is he going to make this interesting for his readers?

Aaron is a participant of the tournament and the guy Lukis has been told to interview. He isn't what Lukis expects - "a pimple-faced boy who lives in his parents' basement and only sees girls when they're pixelated". Aaron completely throws Lukis for a loop, since he is good-looking and fun to be with. They disagree, argue, and finally go out on a date (and they cannot even agree whether it is a date or not) – which only gets really fun when Aaron takes over. Lukis isn’t used to that – he is always in the lead – but, surprisingly, he actually likes it!

If you like the idea of "opposites attract", if you enjoy reading about men who have to face the fact they aren't always right, and if you're looking for a read that is fun, educational, and hot, then you will probably like this short story.
