First in the series following the exploits of the most dangerous man in the galaxy--and his clone--from the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author. On Deluros VIII, the capital of mankind's sprawling Oligarchy, the most famous killer in the galaxy has rested in DeepSleep for over one hundred years, hoping for a cure for the disease that plagues him. But now it's time to wake him up. The governor of Solio II has been assassinated--and the hunt for his murderer is on. Who better for the job than bounty hunter Jefferson Nighthawk, a.k.a. the Widowmaker? No cure has yet been discovered, but Nighthawk can still be of use to the government--as a clone. After being force-fed the equivalent of decades of living in little more than a month, this version of Nighthawk is set loose on the galaxy, aimed straight at his target. His handlers are counting on Nighthawk's bloodthirsty nature to guide him--and his inexperience to keep him from seeing the trap he faces. But unlike the original Nighthawk, who chose to kill, this one has a conscience. One that will cause the government's brilliant plan to backfire when his deadly instincts are unleashed on those who truly deserve his rage . . . Praise for Mike Resnick "Resnick is thought-provoking, imaginative . . . and above all galactically grand." --Los Angeles Times "Nobody spins a yarn better than Mike Resnick." --Orson Scott Card, New York Times-bestselling author of Ender's Game  … (mais)

Crossposted at Bookstooge.booklikes.blogspot.wordpress.com by express permission of this reviewer   Synopsis Jefferson Nighthawk, also known as the Widowmaker, is in deepfreeze for an incurable disease. Unfortunately, that is expensive and even the Widowmaker runs out of money now and then. So to procure more money to keep him on ice until a cure is found, a clone is made and sent on an assignment.   My Thoughts I really enjoyed Resnick's Santiago duology and his Starship series was ok as well. Thankfully, I enjoyed this just as much.   Resnick's Outer Rim is a wonderful place to read about. Characters bigger than fiction, huger than real life. Battles and circumstances so outrageous, so unbelievable that you are sucked in. And you love it, all of it.   This is about a clone, Jeff Nighthawk, who has all the skills of Widowmaker, but not his experience of life, and Jeff resents Widowmaker. So while on assignment, he plans to kill his employer, who has already doublecrossed him and also Widowmaker, so that he, Jeff, will BE the Widowmaker.   Sadly, Jeff falls in love. With a lowclass gold-digger. And you know things never work out well when one of those are involved. So you know the ending from at least halfway through the book, if not sooner.   Simplistic, stylized, pulpy. But oh so fun. I look forward to the rest of this trilogy.   Rating: 4 of 5 Stars   Author: Mike Resnick " ( )

After all the good reviews, I was disappointed. It was candy, but not particularly good candy. The writing wasn't all that good & the story line was full of holes. The hero was too good - almost magical. The suspension of belief asked from me was too great. The universe revolved around our hero. The ending, was the best part, but not enough to make up for the rest. I doubt I'll bother reading another by this author, certainly not in this trilogy. ( )
