The highly acclaimed debut from an author profiled by the New Yorker as her country's "unlikely literary star," Last Night in Nuuk follows the lives of five young Greenlanders exploring their identities at the cusp of adulthood. Niviaq Korneliussen is a ground-breaking young writer hailed for creating "[her] own genre" ( Politiken , Denmark) in her witty and fearless debut Last Night in Nuuk . A work of daring invention about young life in Greenland, Korneliussen brilliantly weaves together the coming of age of five young people in the capital city, Nuuk. Fia has recently sworn off sausage (men) only to discover that the woman she wants is unavailable. Arnaq struggles to cope with her past as her hard-partying life spirals out of control and she betrays those she loves most. Inuk, Fia's brother, is forced to escape Greenland after political scandal implicates him, and confronts the true meaning of home. Meanwhile, Ivik and Sara must confront an important transition in their relationship. In a collection of blurry nights and bleary mornings after, Korneliussen creates a Greenlandic literature unlike any we have known before--young, urbane, stream-of-consciousness, studded with textspeak and delirious with nightlife. With vibrant imagery and daring prose, Korneliussen writes unforgettably about finding yourself and growing into the person you were meant to be. A stunning debut from a brave new voice, Last Night in Nuuk is a dashing entrance onto the literary scene and establishes her as a voice that cannot be ignored.… (mais)

This short and quirky book is set in contemporary Nuuk, written by Greenlander debut author Niviaq Korneliussen. It was originally released with the title "HOMO sapienne," then as "Last Night in Nuuk" in the US and "Crimson" in the UK. It was nominated for a Politiken literary award and the Nordic Council Literature Prize.

It follows the lives of five LGBT young people grappling with their identity, sexuality and relationships. It begins with Fia, bored with her relationship with Peter, who then finds herself attracted to Sara. There is Inuk, Fia’s brother, struggling with this new revelation and with his own secrets and feeling trapped in Greenland. Their friend Arnaq reels dangerously from one drunken party to another, betraying secrets in her dazed state. Then there is Sara and her girlfriend Ivik who is struggling in her own way with her identity. There is a chapter from each character's point of view with text messages and posts interspersed in the text.

This was a quick read, I found the writing fresh, punchy and quite unique. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a book set in Greenland. ( )

Unusual and utterly engrossing in its raw honesty. I wouldn't say I like the style and if it were even a breath less honest it might not work for me; but it's well done, fresh, and insightful. I also really appreciate being able to read about Greenland from the inside. I hope that her latest work is translated soon. ( )

Last Night in Nuuk is a novel about five young Greenlanders who encounter one another on a night out. These chance encounters prove life-changing for all of them, in different ways.

Each character's story leading up to and after these events is told in a separate chapter. As the chapters progress, the characters are fleshed out and the overall picture becomes clearer. Korneliussen delivers a couple of surprises along the way, shifting the reader's perspective considerably.

This is a very interesting look at youth and queer culture in a stultifyingly conservative society. ( )

I did enjoy the book, I just thought there was not enough of it or enough of a plot. It had lovely moments, but didn't add up to a lot for me. I did enjoy the look into Greenland's culture but it was just too little and could have used some fleshing out. ( )
