1307, Carlisle, England Young Allyson is the first to hear of the death of King Edward II during a battle with the Scots-but cannot reveal her knowledge lest she be exposed as a witch. When the man she loves, a Templar, returns from France with news of the disbanding of his order and the arrest of its leaders, she realizes that the heir to England might well betray the Templars to his own advantage. She must turn for aid to the one man she dare not trust: her own husband. Each of them holds a secret that will change the lives of the others as they work to prevent the war with Scotland from becoming the ruin of them all. If you're a fan of the Dark Apostle novels, this novella will show you characters you thought you knew with a history you'd never suspect. For those who are not familiar with The Dark Apostle series, this novella contains an excerpt from volume 1, Elisha Barber: magic, intrigue, and medieval surgery.… (mais)

I have read the two released novels in the Dark Apostle series, and I really enjoyed this novella that follows Allyson and Randall. It takes place against historical events with names familiar to anyone who has watched Braveheart: Longshanks, Edward II, and Robert the Bruce. Ambrose creates deep, well-researched settings with a gritty touch of magic. Here, she goes deeply into the perspectives of Allyson, a witch who has kept her abilities and emotions hidden from her new husband, Randall, after her very abusive first marriage. This novella is a love story, but absolutely not a romance. These are two people deeply divided by a lack of communication and the expectations of their own gender roles within the period, and it's a divide that makes sense considering Allyson's past abuse.

I highly recommend this for readers who enjoy historical fantasy, and it's a great introduction to the world if you haven't read any of the Dark Apostle novels. ( )
