Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children. No Solicitations. No Visitors. No Quests. Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere...else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced...they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world. But Nancy's arrival marks a change at the Home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it's up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of things. No matter the cost.… (mais)

This story is weird and delightful and wistful and I loved reading it. I've been seeing people rave about the Wayward Children series for a long time and I definitely understand why; it has familiar ideas and settings (like the hidden Narnia-ish lands and a boarding school) but McGuire twists them in her own unique way and makes this world really standout. I personally adored the blend of magical realism and murder mystery here- I don't think I've read anything quite like it before!
Part of me wishes the book has another couple hundred pages, but knowing there are plenty more books (plus 3 more unreleased ones) has me excited to keep reading. ( )

This book sings to my heart. I don't know any other way to describe it. It made me cry, which Seanan is prone to doing, but ultimately what I felt was uplifted, transported by this slender little volume to a place where hope, despite being a four-letter-word, remains powerful. The characters and their stories are unique and beautiful. Although I've only read this book once so far, I suspect very strongly that it will become my most reread of Seanan's works. ( )

DNF. Not because of the book, but because I was listening to the audio. I keep trying to do audio books, so I can listen to them on the treadmill, etc. but I. HATE. AUDIO. BOOKS. Seriously... I’ve TRIED to like audio books (and e-books). I just can’t... I’ll probably try reading this with a physical copy of the book, because the premise is intriguing.

I found this novella both intriguing and surprising. I was not expecting a murder mystery! I liked that there was no fluff. The story was told without any tangents, and it looks like the next book will be a prequel about Jack & Jill, so there was no need for more information than was necessary for the plot to move along. My library seems to have all of this series on the shelf so I may very well just power through them all.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a bit of a darker fantasy story. ( )

Still thinking about how much I hated this book after 2+ years, lol. A self-satisfied and self-congratulatory plotless mess where all the characters are juvenile angsty vignettes with a few racist caricatures thrown in, which still somehow receives rave reviews.

mark monday says most of what I want to say about it, but the handling of the main character's eating disorder is also unintentionally horrifying. Like YEAH I get why your parents are so worried about you, dumbass! ( )

You're nobody's rainbow.

You're nobody's princess.

You're nobody's doorway but your own, and the only one who gets to tell you how your story ends is you.
"Hope hurts. That's what you need to learn, and fast, if you don't want it to cut you open from the inside out. Hope is bad. Hope means you keep on holding to things that won't ever be so again, and so you bleed an inch at a time until there's nothing left."
We notice the silence of men. We depend upon the silence of women.
"You had milk, I had science," said Jack. "It's amazing how much of culinary achievement can be summarized by that sentence. Cheese making, for example. The perfect intersection of milk, science, and foolish disregard for the laws of nature."
"I am a genius of infinite potential and highly limited patience. People shouldn't try me so."
