Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children. No Solicitations. No Visitors. No Quests. Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere...else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced...they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world. But Nancy's arrival marks a change at the Home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it's up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of things. No matter the cost.… (mais)

A beautifully lyrical little novel, Every Heart a Doorway is an amazing concept. But it left me wanting more; it's almost like a vignette into a short time at the school. I wanted to know more about the worlds, and the compass directions, and how everyone was affected by or chosen by their respective worlds.

I waffled between three and four stars for that reason. I enjoyed reading it and was intrigued, and the mystery was well-done, but overall it was so short it felt a little lacking. ( )

***Read for the magical readathon year 2020 ***
Ancient Runes - Heart Rune: heart on the cover or in the title ★★★☆☆

Jup the writing style still isn't for me. I actually took a star off this time around.

***After reading***
I read this a few days ago and I still don't know what I was expecting and what my feeling actually are. It's not really a happy story. And I didn't like the ending. But it was a good way to end the story.

***Before reading***
I tried to not read/listen to anything about this story. Even if I once read the blurb I've forgotten what is said. The only thing I know is that it is about kids who went somewhere and now have PTSD? I can vaguely remember a question... What happens to the people who came back? *shrugs* it sounded interesting and I thought the last in this series came out so I bought the whole series at once in hardcover (what a pain that was, my country... sjeez, I'm still bitter about Becky Chambers her books). Also they are short and for some reason I have trouble with longer stories now... ( )

Wow! Not what I expected from this book. I was extremely awed and mesmerized by [a:Seanan McGuire|2860219|Seanan McGuire|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1245623198p2/2860219.jpg]'s writing and world building.

The story is dark: There are doorways to "other worlds" and it seems that each doorway is meant for a certain person, and those people are few and far between. Once you find your door, you might not come back or you could come back not wanting to....Eleanor West has a home for the Wayward children who come back against their will. Here she hopes to make their lives a little bit better. There is something sinister going on though at Miss West's home.

The book has some humor, it explores gender and acceptance. I fell in love with a couple of the characters. All in all a very satisfying read. ( )

Interesting concept but I felt like something was missing. Maybe the story was a bit rushed. ( )

A great YA or teen book about those children (like Wendy from Peter Pan or Alice fron Alice in Wonderland) that find a door to another world and want to get back to that world. Great characters including diverse ones, amazing world building and a murder mystery essentially. ( )

You're nobody's rainbow.

You're nobody's princess.

You're nobody's doorway but your own, and the only one who gets to tell you how your story ends is you.
"Hope hurts. That's what you need to learn, and fast, if you don't want it to cut you open from the inside out. Hope is bad. Hope means you keep on holding to things that won't ever be so again, and so you bleed an inch at a time until there's nothing left."
We notice the silence of men. We depend upon the silence of women.
"You had milk, I had science," said Jack. "It's amazing how much of culinary achievement can be summarized by that sentence. Cheese making, for example. The perfect intersection of milk, science, and foolish disregard for the laws of nature."
"I am a genius of infinite potential and highly limited patience. People shouldn't try me so."
