Light of Day is about a young radio personality, Gabby, who gets wrapped up in a boy and his gang as she attempts to save her friend, Bree. Bree, a fellow high school senior, gets kidnapped by a pimp and forced into prostitution. Gabby, in attempt to save Bree, ends up meeting the mysterious X, a gang leader whose sole goal is to free all prostitutes from their pimps. Along the way, Gabby ends up falling in love with X and a romance pursues. While reading, I was concerned with the message this book was sending. Gabby blindly makes assumptions (that are often wrong in the worst way) and puts insane amounts of trust in a guy she doesn’t even know, who openly admits to being dangerous. What’s worse is that in the end everything works out perfectly, which then basically justifies every stupid risk and wrong assumption Gabby makes. She saves her friend, gets the guy, and even ends up having an even better relationship with her parents. All because she put her trust in a street gang and got involved in a dangerous situation. It’s the worst type of realistic fiction, where the only thing real about it is that it takes place in modern time. The way everything ends so perfectly is purely fantasy. ( )
