When First Comics was publishing Jon Sable, it wasn't on my regular pick-up list. I did start to get into it a little later when I managed to grab some issues from a used bookstore. In a world and time of nothing but superheroes, Jon Sable was a breath of fresh air. The characterization, the stories, and the fact that Sable looked like he was based on a very young Richard Gere, immediately got me hooked.

It was still difficult to track down issues as I was not as well versed with local comics shops as I am today (and the fact that there were maybe two in the city at the time) and so it was until many years later.

When IDW started collecting all the early issues in these trades, I was ecstatic. More so than Grimjack, Jon Sable was a great, fun read. The trades are somewhat more expensive than some of the other, similar, products, but the level of satisfaction I got when I finished that first volume more than made up for it.

The fifth trade was recently published and this one reprints issues 22 through 27 of the series. Herein, we find out more of Jon Sable's past, including his parents, as well as the start of his romance with Myke Blackmon. Some really great work as well as wonderful scenes of intimacy - the likes of which I never saw in the times of its original run.

I love this character, and I love this series. I'll keep buying as long as IDW keeps publishing! ( )
