The New York Times bestselling author of The Aviator's Wife returns with a triumphant new novel about New York's "Swans" of the 1950s--and the scandalous, headline-making, and enthralling friendship between literary legend Truman Capote and peerless socialite Babe Paley. Of all the glamorous stars of New York high society, none blazes brighter than Babe Paley. Her flawless face regularly graces the pages of Vogue, and she is celebrated and adored for her ineffable style and exquisite taste, especially among her friends--the alluring socialite Swans Slim Keith, C.Z. Guest, Gloria Guinness, and Pamela Churchill. By all appearances, Babe has it all: money, beauty, glamour, jewels, influential friends, a high-profile husband, and gorgeous homes. But beneath this elegantly composed exterior dwells a passionate woman--a woman desperately longing for true love and connection. Enter Truman Capote. This diminutive golden-haired genius with a larger-than-life personality explodes onto the scene, setting Babe and her circle of Swans aflutter. Through Babe, Truman gains an unlikely entr?e into the enviable lives of Manhattan's elite, along with unparalleled access to the scandal and gossip of Babe's powerful circle. Sure of the loyalty of the man she calls "True Heart," Babe never imagines the destruction Truman will leave in his wake. But once a storyteller, always a storyteller--even when the stories aren't his to tell. Truman's fame is at its peak when such notable celebrities as Frank and Mia Sinatra, Lauren Bacall, and Rose Kennedy converge on his glittering Black and White Ball. But all too soon, he'll ignite a literary scandal whose repercussions echo through the years. The Swans of Fifth Avenue will seduce and startle readers as it opens the door onto one of America's most sumptuous eras. Advance praise for The Swans of Fifth Avenue "The strange and fascinating relationship between Truman Capote and his 'swans' is wonderfully reimagined in this engrossing novel. It's a credit to Benjamin that we end up caring so much for these women of power, grace, and beauty--and for Capote, too."--Sara Gruen, New York Time s bestselling author of Water for Elephants "A delicious tale ... Melanie Benjamin has turned Truman Capote's greatest scandal into your next must-read book-club selection." --Jamie Ford, New York Times bestselling author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet "Reading The Swans of Fifth Avenue is like being ushered into a party where you're offered champagne and fed the sumptuous secrets of New York's elite--without having to pay the price afterward." --Vanessa Diffenbaugh, New York Times bestselling author of The Language of Flowers "Benjamin convincingly portrays a large cast of colorful historical figures while crafting a compelling, gossipy narrative with rich emotional depth." -- Library Journal "The beautiful people of the fifties and sixties glitter in this riveting tale of betrayal and greed. ... Irresistible, astonishing, and told with verve." --Lynn Cullen, nationally bestselling author of Mrs. Poe "From Truman Capote's devious charm to Babe Paley's tragic glamour, Melanie Benjamin conjures, in vivid detail, a lost world. The season's must-read guilty pleasure." --Michael Callahan, author of Searching for Grace Kelly "A deliciously spiky novel of love and betrayal." --Alex George, author of A Good American From the Hardcover edition.… (mais)

This is a fictional account of a real life group of 'friends' or actually a click of socialites. They gossip and shop. They have work done to be perfect and talk about others. They're bread for marriage. Truman Capote infiltrates their little group. He's a real piece of work too. This book just wasn't my jam. I don't like the whole rich people behaving badly thing. I don't watch reality tv or keep up with all that. This is what it felt like to me. ( )

I actually enjoyed this book -- it's one of those that will send me off on other reading journeys as I pursue more information about these real-life characters. Benjamin is quite good at historical fiction/biography and from the little I knew before of Truman Capote, I think she captured him well. (Think rattlesnake) It traces his entree into NY society on the coattails of a group of famous society women he refers to as his swans. His most prized friendship is with Babe Paley and her husband, TV mogul Bill Paley. Benjamin is good at creating ambiguity -- while their friendship is very tender, ultimately neither character is very likeable, though Babe is certainly portrayed sympathetically, almost saintly. The books spans the late 50s into the 70s so all the cultural references and the erosion of social niceties (like gloves and hats and dressing for dinner) is an interesting sideline. It also follows the arc of Capote's career and the pressure of fame, public adoration, and ruthless ambition. Predominantly, the book is about relationships and examines the weaknesses and flaws Babe and Truman had and how they sought wholeness and acceptance beyond the surface of their beautiful glamorous lives. Definitely transports the reader/listener to a bygone era. The swan symbolism is a little overdone and the author's point a little belabored but I was captivated by a world far-removed from my own. This was a fascinating glimpse into 1960s New York society and the relationships of Truman Capote with his Society swans. The characters were well developed, complexand compelling even though not always likeable. I previously read The Aviator's Wife and Melanie Benjamin did not disappoint with her latest novel.

A gifted copy provided by Random House Publishing Group-Ballantine via NetGalley for an honest review.

The Kindle edition of this book seemed to skip from the middle of the book to the end. Try to borrow paper copy of book sometime to see what's going on. ( )

I noticed this novel because I've been a fan of [a:Truman Capote|431149|Truman Capote|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1419249359p2/431149.jpg] for many years. I'm not sure if someone unfamiliar with neither his life or his novels would enjoy this novel or not. I am familiar with both and enjoyed this novel. I do recommended it to anyone who is a fan of Truman Capote and want to know more about his tragic and colorful life. ( )

Languid, lovely, lonely; the swans arched their beautiful necks and turned to gaze at him as he stood rooted to the shore, his feet encased in mud.

Instead, she raised her glass once more, and it was miraculously filled. Oh, being rich was simply lovely, when it came right down to it. Hold out a glass, and it was filled. Hold out an arm, and it was thrust into a satin-lined fur coat. Hold out a finger, and it was encrusted with jewels.
What if something worse was made known to the world via the poison of Truman Capote's pen?
Bastard! Gloria detested men who lied more than she detested women who did. Women, after all, were trained to do nothing else from birth. We lie about pain, we lie about happiness, we lie about how happy men make us, how good they make us feel when really all we want is to sleep in a clean, warm bed. Alone.
Slim, she noticed, had apparently applied her makeup with a trowel, and now it was sliding down her face, like melted frosting.
She never voiced these fears, these demons that chased after her with flaming daggers.
