In the brief golden years of the Edwardian era, Rosie McCosh and her three sisters are growing up in an idyllic household in the countryside south of London. With their neighbors, the two Pitt brothers and the three Pendennis boys, they are The Pals. But these days of childhood camaraderie and adventure are brought to an abrupt end by the outbreak of World War I, in which some will lose their lives, some their loved ones, some their faith, and all of them their innocence. We follow them through the years of the war in the trenches, in air battles, in the hospitals where the women serve with as much passion and nearly as much hardship as the men at the front and its aftermath as the modern world slowly emerges out of the ashes of the old. A wholly immersive novel about a particular time and place, this novel also illuminates the timeless ways in which men and women carry profound loss alongside indelible hope.… (mais)

I had high hopes that I would like this novel as much as I did Captain Corelli's Mandolin, and for once my expectations did not let me down! De Bernieres moved away from his focus on South American politics (not a subject I care for, or enjoyed in his novels previously) and back to the European arena during and after the wars. He follows much the same pattern as in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, just swapping the Italian/Greek campaigns of World War II for the Western Front and England during the Great War, so readers will likely not be shocked by the plot line or character developments but still be well entertained. His deep understanding of human nature allows De Bernieres to present a broad spectrum of reactions to the Great War - which spans from the young men eager to serve their country, to those on the home front who are silently stoic about the whole endeavour and refuse to change along with the rest of the world - which truely makes this a heartfelt novel that I'm sure anyone can connect with. I don't really want to get into the details of what makes this book such a great read, since I don't want to ruin a single scene, but suffice it to say that this book is definitely making my top 5 of 2015! This felt like a huge read. I like books that are set in historical times, and this is set very well into the era around the First World War. The way we move through time with the central characters and watch them grow is very enjoyable. ( )

What saves it is its quotidian, cumulative charm, as one comes to like and appreciate the people in it even if they are often annoying and keep saying and doing the same faintly ridiculous things.

This was the day that Daniel vaulted the wall.

Only when it is covered with snow is purity restored to this land, and even then the trenches cut through it like cracks in glass. (p. 55)
Already five graves there, soldiers planted like vegetables, against the day of harvest. (p. 83)
Mme Pitt took a sip of wine and held it in her mouth for a moment before swallowing it.
'Marriage is like a wine,' she said. 'Sometimes it can only be drunk very young, and then it goes bad and gets worse and worse. Sometimes when it is young it's horrible, affreux! And then the years pass and it becomes wonderful, and perhaps you don't even notice, and then you realise that at last the wine has becomes beautiful and you are happy. Sometimes a wine must be left alone and sometimes it must be blended and tasted and changed a little. And sometimes someone must come along and turn every bottle over, many times over. I am going to turn the bottles over, tu sais?' (pp. 444–5)
