I enjoyed reading this book because I too played soccer growing up and even in school. Growing up Mexican, cafe in the morning were a must. I really enjoyed reading the story of Lola and her friendships, family, and hobbies.

I related to Lola because I was usually friends with more boys than girls. I was also a goalie on my field hockey team.

I loved this chapter book, it had great meaning and demonstrated great funds of knowledge. I think this is perfect book for someone who is starting to read chapter books, as its not too long, and entertaining. In addition there are pages of illustrations and some pages show the letters she writes so it feels like you know her. ( )

Lola is a competitive girl. She likes to play sports and may not be exactly your traditional girl character. Her best friend is a boy, and the girls tell her that she can't do that, among other things. One day, she accidentally gets a little too competitive and hurts someone. After that the kids start calling her 'Mean Lola Levine" which really hurts her feelings. Through her ability to express herself she manages to work out the situation, and resolve the problem.

Lola's character really stepped out of the stereotypical role for girls in literature. I felt that even though her love of soccer was a main theme, anyone could appreciate her struggle and relate to how she was feeling. This short novel packed in a lot of content for me. It crossed stereotyped roles and pressed the importance of communication and being kind and caring. I would share with students who are having problems with name-calling, bullying, or acceptance of students who step outside of traditional gendered activities.

I really don’t have much to say when it comes to this book because it didn’t offer me anything new to think about or consider. The storyline was very familiar and predictable but hey what am I supposed to expect from an elementary school novel. This would be a good book for a young kid to read, and even a second grader should be able to read this in one day and understand the message.
