*I received a copy of the book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.*

If you're looking for a good mystery, this is it! I love a story where I think I've figured out the "who" in the whodunnit, but then, no - it must be THIS person...and then you get another twist. Plenty of well calculated twists in this story.

While told from multiple points of view, that of Alex was the most compelling - perhaps because she was a bit damaged and her struggles were so REAL. Her alcoholism, and the way she functions was so compelling, and was a fascinating counter to Amy's comatose existence.

This book had me hooked from the beginning and I was surprised to learn this was the author's debut novel. Looking forward to what comes next from Holly Seddon. ( )

While this wasn't a perfect book, I absolutely enjoyed it and was engaged from beginning to end.

I just wrote a much more detailed review for my site and my brain seems to be cramping up looking for what to say here but I think fans of dark suspense and mysteries would enjoy Try Not to Breathe.

Like I said, it's not perfect - there are some aspects that don't ring true, there's a POV that seems unnecessary, the thrilling climax wasn't very thrilling, but, all in all, I liked it a lot and if a sequel comes to be, I'll definitely pick it up. For a debut novel, I think it was pretty damn well done and shows a lot of promise for future offerings.

I received an ARC from NetGalley (yay for checking one off my long list of NG books to be read and reviewed!) in exchange for an honest review. ( )

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. This story is a thriller about a girl named Amy who was brutally attacked as a teenager and left in a vegetive state. The story engaging and kept me guessing as to who the guy was that attacked Amy. I thought the fact that Amy was in a vegetive state but was able to understand and communicate to a small degree was an interesting piece to the story. Jacob, who was dating Amy in high school when her attack happened, had an important piece to the story too. Although he didn’t handle everything in his life well, I felt sorry for him. The author did a good job at expressing the despair of the girl’s situation. Spending so many years in that state is horrible to imagine. I enjoyed the triumph of Alex being able to redeem herself by overcoming her own personal struggle to redeem herself as well as being champion for this girl that was all but forgotten by time. This book is definitely worth reading. ( )

This book was ok. I purchased it on a recommendation but now it's finished I've decided it's not a keeper so off to the rounds of the family it goes (maybe one of them will like it better).

It seemed to me that there were some great ideas in this but I just couldn't connect with the characters. Especially Jacob's wife her paranoia seemed very much imposed on her rather than integrated into her personality. Perhaps we should have seen a chapter from her POV just prior to 'the bank statements'. And then it seems all is happy again and she doesn't hold any grudges about what her husband put her through.

The idea of being able to communicate with people in a coma via MRI intrigued me (and sent me diving down google rabbit holes) so that was a pro for this book. It did seem strange though that the prior attempt of this with Amy got 'stuck' on the activity of tennis and that when she didn't respond as expected it was abandoned, maybe it was part of the testing protocol but it seemed a bit peculiar.

Simon was a definite enigma considering the role it turned out he played and I can see the utility in having him only revealed as he appeared to others. I do wonder though that when the trial comes at the end that there was difficulty in extraditing him due to his crimes in other constituencies. So we're to believe that either through synchronicity he is identified as being the perpetrator for all of these crimes at the same time, or that after Alex identities him as a viable suspect that all of these police forces say "Oooh that's our man" for x. Hmmm

I won't be recommending this to anyone but I have started it on the rounds rather than sending it straight to the donation pile so there is that. (Although if I hadn't happened to see my mother 30mins after I finished it the outcome may have been different.
