I realized in this book how the little girl didn't like when the other kids called her names that weren't hers. She was so frustrated that she decided to change her name to 'Emily.' Her mom and dad were slightly confused but went along with it. Going about the day telling stories about grandma and how she did so many great things. Little did Aviva know that they were telling her stories on why her name was hers. At bedtime when she finally asks her parents, she understands that her name is special and she finds it more valuable.

This is a friendly book, and giving children the weirdest names from the family's past is a cool cool thing. ( )

Aviva's parents start calling her Emily and then her mom starts telling her about her Great Grandma Ada and how important she was in her mom's life. Aviva keeps asking how she got her name and finally learns that it came from her Great Grandma Ada. Aviva feels special about her name and decides to go by her name again.
Genre- This book is realistic fiction because this story could happen in real life. Many children might struggle with this same issue.

I think this book is great for children to read when learning about family. Aviva is getting made fun of at school for her name so she decides to change her name to Emily and questions to her mother why her name was given to her. The story follows Aviva and her mother around town preparing to make chicken soup, a recipe of Aviva's great grandmother. Aviva learns more about her wonderful great grandmother and why her own mother admired her so much. This teaches children about the importance of knowing where you come from and learning who is important in your life. At the end of the book Aviva learns she is named after her great grandmother's Hebrew name which means spring. Aviva is then proud of her name and resorts to being called that again. The story is a powerful one to young children who may be going through something similar or who forget how important family is. ( )
