Ah, some research shows this was a "versification of the story"). The oddest thing was how normal it was - how similar to all the modern variations on the story. Though the three brothers a) haven't shown up in any story I'm aware of, possibly because b) they barely show up here. They certainly have neither names nor personalities, not even as much as the greedy sisters. I'm delighted to have found this and read it, just for the history - I'm always hearing about how the Brothers Grimm and their ilk sweetened the stories to their concept of what was appropriate for children. Aside from the fates of the sisters - and there's a chance (unlikely, but a chance) of redemption even there - this one seems to have escaped mostly without change.
