I really enjoyed the first law trilogy when I read it 5 or so years ago, but it looks like I can't be bothered with this type of writing anymore. It's just violent, sweary, graphic action. Now it's very well done violent, sweary, graphic action, but that's all it is. Nothing happens with the characters emotionally, and there is no change or development and no reason to care about them. If you just want violent, sweary, graphic action though then this is probably perfect for you.
(Perhaps it suffers for being in the short form, as there is no time to build up a connection with the characters?) ( )

Sharp Ends is a collection of rather long short stories that at times weave into each other. Not quite enough to form a coherent story though. There are some characters I find intriguing and others I'd like to know more about (probably from some book I read 10 years ago and have forgotten) but not quite enough to make it a really good book.

Chronologically it takes place before the other books. I think. At least to a large degree. ( )

I thought this was a really solid anthology. The stories were all generally good with a couple of gems - my personal favourites were Sworbreck's tale of Cosca (Freedom), which was some nice comic relief and Bethod's tale about Logen (Made a Monster). The Bloody Nine is a mad bastard, and it was good to see the 'betrayal' from another set of eyes. Glokta's tale at the start (A Beautiful Bastard) was also a great insight into everybody's favourite torturer and what made him the man he is. Very entertaining read and made me all the more excited for A Little Hatred! ( )

Sharp Ends is a short story collection by Joe Abercrombie, all set in the World of the First Law Trilogy.

It's been a while that I read the First Law Trilogy or any of the novels set in that world, and Sharp Ends made it clear to me how much I have forgotten. Damn. You'd think that books I liked would stay in my brain better than this. In any case, the stories in Sharp Ends did make me want to re-visit the novels to sharpen the connections between them. And maybe draw up my own timeline of events, since the book unfortunately, doesn't provide one that includes the other books. It is a very nice collection for fans of the world, though I probably wouldn't recommend it for newcomers.
