3.5 Stars. I have enjoyed other books by this author and this was another good book! I liked the news announcements/articles throughout the book that brought in humor and a different perspective. I listened to this as an audiobook and enjoyed the narrator! ( )

I received a copy of this book free from the publisher for review.

If possible, I would give this book 3 1/2 stars. (We all say that so often, you'd think GoodReads would get the hint!!) The story was enjoyable, but it requires the reader to accept quite a few 'coincidences' to make the story work. I thought most of the main characters were sympathetic and reasonably likable; in some cases, their faults actually made them more relatable and likable.

This is the first book by this author that I've read. I don't enjoy the 'written as it happens' type of storytelling, but it was well-written, all the same, enough that I'll be trying other books of her's.

All in all, it was an excellent example of Historical Fiction and I recommend it, both to fans of that genre, and other readers. ( )

Certain Age is fabulous historical fiction with the setting placed in the glamours 1920s. The story is inspired by Der Rosenkavalier and I was totally charmed with this interpretation. For me, was this book extra interesting to read since I have read the other two books that come after A Certain Age, and now I get the full background story to Sophie Fortescue and here sister Virginias life before we once again met Virginia in Cocoa Beach. One thing I really enjoyed about this book is the way Theresa Marshall is written. It was pretty obvious that her young lover, Octavian, become madly in love with Sophie after meeting her, but Theresa who obviously tried to keep her lover never become a villain in this story. To be honest, I liked her. She was the character whose POV I loved the most in the book. I had nothing against Sophie, her POV was also good, but I never truly enjoyed here storyline as much as I enjoyed Theresa's.

The ending is bittersweet and perfect. I truly enjoyed reading this book and it made me eager to someday re-read Cocoa Beach now when I have read this book. ( )

Set in the roaring 20s, this is a story of a murder and the people involved in that murder, about 15 years later. There is also a side story of affairs and unwanted marriages. Theresa Marshall, a real beauty, is married and having an affair with "Boyo". Theresa's brother becomes engaged to a young woman, Sophie. Sophie's father, The Patent King, is a cold, reclusive man. Boyo is asked by Theresa to investigate Sophie and her family to be sure there is nothing in their past. As a result, there are many things that come to light. I found the novel to be plodding at times. ( )

The book starts at a murder trial in the 1920's.
The story is about two families, on one side we have Theresa and her brother Ox, on the other is Sophie and her family.
They are tied together by Octavian. Octavian and Theresa are having an affair. Ox has recently become engaged to Sophie. Theresa asks Octavian to do a little digging into Sophie's family, she is a bit suspicious about the family's sudden wealth.

Theresa gets way more than she asked for when Octavian develops feelings for Sophie and uncovers a huge, devastating family secret.

The murder trial definitely added a different element to the story. But I couldn't get as invested in this story as I usually do with this author's books.

Did I miss the part where they explained where the family's wealth came from? Did it not matter in the scheme of things? ( )

During the night, I dream that my husband arrives unexpectedly from Manhattan, in a plume of sultry exhaust from the engine of his Buick Battistini speedster, and let me tell you, the intrusion is most unwelcome.

During the summer months, we shack up here in the old carriage house, because while Sylvester and I have always occupied separate bedrooms here at the estate on Long Island, we do maintain a certain informal code about receiving lovers directly under the matrimonial roof. Mutual respect is the foundation of a solid marriage, after all.
Someone told me he flew airplanes in France, had only just returned, the sole man in his squadron to survive, but then they always say that, don't they? The only man in his squadron to come home alive! He's never one of three survivors, or ten. All the other poor sons of bitches have to die, in order to render the cocktail conversation more breathless, the chitchat, tip-top, the midsummer ennui less oppressive.
