Couldn't quite be bothered with The Lady, but the other three were a fairly fun break between other reads. Particularly enjoyed 'The Clothes They Stood Up In', not so much 'Father, Father Burning Bright' nor 'The Laying on of Hands'. I think I need to have Bennett's voice in my head to read his work. Otherwise it's pretty dull, and not in an entertiningly ironic AlanBennett kind of way... ( ) A wry description of four very different situations that show this author to have the skill t set up characters and situations that are unexpected but he does this with a good empathy The laying on of Hands, The clothes they stood up in, Father Farther Burning Bright, The lady in the Van. Personally I think the order of these four stories is of interest but I would have put down the whole book after teh first story which was too lade with Religion and fervor. Quite glad I persisted however I got given this for an easter present and i really enjoyed reading it as much i would have enjoyed eating a chocolate egg. All four stories are beautifuuly written in a witty insightful way i enjoyed the second one the most. Many a giggle will be had when reading this and all 4 are original and interesting, sometimes a bit cringing but always vivid and intriguing. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica
Like everything Bennett does, these stories are playful, witty and painfully observant of ordinary people's foibles. They all have brilliant twists, are immensely entertaining and highly moral. And all are modern classics. The Laying on of HandsThe painfully observant account of a memorial service for a masseur to the famous. The Clothes They Stood Up InThe comic tale of an elderly couple's trials after their flat is stripped completely bare. Father! Father! Burning BrightThe savage satire on the family of a dying man who rules over them from his hospital bed. The Lady in the VanThe true story of the eccentric old woman who is invited to live in a homeowner's front garden. She stays there, in her van, for fifteen years. The home is Alan Bennett's. It became a West End hit, starring Maggie Smith. Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |
