Kaz Brekker and his crew have just pulled off a heist so daring even they didn't think they'd survive. But instead of divvying up a fat reward, they're right back to fighting for their lives. Double-crossed and badly weakened, the crew is low on resources, allies, and hope. As powerful forces from around the world descend on Ketterdam to root out the secrets of the dangerous drug known as jurda parem, old rivals and new enemies emerge to challenge Kaz's cunning and test the team's fragile loyalties. A war will be waged on the city's dark and twisting streets--a battle for revenge and redemption that will decide the fate of the Grisha world. --… (mais)

I'm pretty satisfied by the ending of this book. I've grown so attached to these characters, I loved the action and adventure! ( )

Because the first season of the Netflix series includes the introduction of the Crows, Holly also recommended I read the Six of Crows duology. And so I did. I have to admit I liked Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom much for than I did The Grisha Trilogy. I like nothing better than bad good guys, and the Crows are that and more. Their personalities are more vibrant. Their morals are gray but not really. Their heist is a thing of beauty, and their ability to beat the odds is perfection. The sleight of hand scenes are almost as good as their banter, but it is their flaws that make them real and personable. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of the Crows in the future! ( )

Bardugo is a great writer and I enjoyed this immensely, even if I found it slightly too long for my current predilections. I don't know that I want to read a bunch of books set in this Grishaverse though so if she wanted to branch out into other genres, like historical fiction, that'd be swell. ( )

Although I intended to finish Six of Crows Duology in 2020, I am glad that I get to start this year by finishing Crooked Kingdom. I read a review saying that Six of Crows is about hope and Crooked Kingdom is about recovering from previous tragedies and hurts that life has given them. And I agree completely. For me, the back story of Kaz Brekker is one of the best that I have read so far, even better than Aelin Ashyrver Whitethorn Galathynius (Caelena Sordotien). The death of Matthias Helvar struck a chord and I wish to read further about Nina and how she honours his last wish. Jesper and Wylan make a cute couple. Eager to start King of Scars and read further about Nikolai Lanstov! ( )

***UPDATE on 5 sept. 2017***

I'M STILL MAD ABOUT THE ENDING!

***REVIEW on 27 july 2017***

First of all I really liked the story. So although I can get ranty about certain things, it was an amusing read and I will totally reread it in the future. It got me excited again to read my physical books!

On to the rant:
WTF?!

Why exactly did Mattias die? And at that moment? Really what purpose did that serve? This is the downside of Games of Thrones. It made it acceptable to just kill people off. It works in those books because DEATH IS RANDOM. But this whole story was about pulling the impossible of. And it worked!
They did it! And then BAM he died. And we don't really see a fallout because of that because the story is by then almost over. WTF.

Now. Mattias was not my favorite. I just couldn't care for his character. But he belonged in the story. Although his death was written very emotionally I was more like: 'meh'. I liked the chapter in which he goes on to his afterlife but, nope, stone cold on the emotion front.

I teared more up when Inej saw her parents.

I'm so frikking mad. And it truly spoiled some of my enjoyment.
That being said... I would read books with these characters in them.

But wasn't that what every girl dreamed? That she'd wake up and find herself a princess? Or blessed with magical powers and a grand destiny? Maybe there were people who lived those lives. Maybe this girl was one of them. But what about the rest of us? What about the nobodies and the nothings, the invisible girls? We learn to hold our heads as if we wear crowns. We learn to wring magic from the ordinary. That was how you survived when you weren't chosen, when there was no royal blood in your veins. When the world owed you nothing, you demanded something of it anyway. (460)
