Six years ago, a highly contagious virus wiped out more than ninety-nine percent of the country's population. The only person to contract the virus and survive, Cricket fled her identity and the safety of New Caelum, an airtight city. Now eighteen, she watches the city where the wealthy cocooned from the devastating outbreak. When the city's rumbling incinerator wakes her one night while she and her friends are camping just beyond the city walls, she alone knows what the fiery machine means: the lethal virus is back. Only eighteen, Westlin Layne is already being groomed to succeed his mother as New Caelum's next president. Suddenly West's sister develops symptoms of the deadly virus thought to be eradicated years ago. Placed under quarantine, the president confesses to West a long-held secret: Christina Black, West's childhood friend and first love, survived the virus, and her body alone holds the precious antibodies to save his sister. Now West must leave the city to find Christina. But Cricket has no intention of being found.… (mais)

When she left she was but a child, now an orphan as far as she knows and when she decided to leave she also left behind a large part of her heart. She had to change and become someone new it was her only chance to survive the new world. New Caelum was the name of the city where the illness never touched and only the ones capable of paying in some form could survive. Whether it be by money or a job no one else could do, there was a price to live in New Caelum but few truly knew the actual price for their survival. Cricket lived in the outside of New Caelum, but was constantly watching over it as if something may happen or change that would allow everyone to survive in the world these days and hopefully bring families back together. Cricket had no family that she knew of that still lived in this new world were a disease took everyone she ever loved as family away from her. Her parents were out of the States when the new president shut down all flights in and out of the States to prepare for the falling of the disease upon millions. What if there was one person with all the answers to all the questions peple had been asking for over 6 years? What if that one person did not even know she held the answers or what to do with them once it befell her to stand up? Life on the outside was not easy but it was peaceful most of the time and as time passed dpeople began to come together again in units that made up new families and Cricket would do anything to protect them as was part of living in a unit like this one. One for all and all for one or no one would survive. Her world is turned upside down when New Caelum does what it said it never would, allow people to explore the outside. ( )
