The second volume of the collected comic strip by Judd Winick, Frumpy the Clown is kind of like Calvin & Hobbes, if you replace the stuffed tiger with a six foot tall clown and dial down the sentimentalism by about 50%. Winick has created an endearing family dynamic with Frumpy and his adoptive family, and both volumes in this collection capture that entire two year run. Frumpy the Clown deserves to be recognized in the company of Bloom County and yes, even the kid with his stuffed tiger, and if you enjoy comic strips like that, Frumpy will fit right in. ( ) I've come to like this odd strip about a 6'4" obnoxious, bad-tempered chain-smoking clown with a very well-hidden heart of gold quite a bit, and I was sad to see the final few panels of this book signalling its planned demise. At least Winick went on to even better things with his "Barry Wein" books. Style and humor-wise, this strip reminds me a lot of "Bloom County". sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica

Frumpy is not your typical clown. He doesn't do birthday parties, he isn'tin the circus, and he's never run for public office. Instead, Frumpy is achain-smoking, cynical anarchist who is more interested in sticking it to thestuffed-shirt establishment than making balloon animals or performing in thecenter ring. Whether he's filling in for the elementary school music teacher, dishing legal advice to the kids, or going paintballing with the guys, Frumpyentertains, enlightens and always surprises. Judd Winick's early newspaper worktells of one clown's attempts to assimilate into suburban life, or at least getsuburban life to assimilate to him. Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |
