Plot: Basically, a man decides to marry his dead brother's ex because she's carrying his baby. This story is about how they get together and what their marriage is like. This book is part of a series, but I didn't feel lost or confused at all having not read any of the previous books. So this is a true standalone. Aside from being interested in the back story of the characters from other books, it's not necessary to this plot to read the other books.
Characters:
Nyla is not your typical leading lady. She's a young African American woman with a fondness for death metal bands, tattoos, and piercings in her face. She had a rough life growing up, being bounced around from foster home to foster home, but was most hurt when the people from what she thought would be her forever home turned her out. She works now as a social worker at a women's shelter.
Go Gutierrez is a robotics genius and has a company worth billions. But he's a bit different from other people. He has problems processing certain things and tolerating certain sensory inputs. His life runs on plans and he can't tolerate any variation. Nyla constantly throws a wrench into his plans and he really doesn't know how to deal with her. At first, she doesn't think he likes her, but she soon realizes it's quite the opposite.
These two have an interesting relationship. And despite their baggage, they must learn to live with each other and even trust each other. But when something happens to test that newfound trust, the question isn't so much how to get past it, but rather, if they can get past it. With an explosive ending with a bit of a plot twist, this book really keeps your attention. Overall, I'm still not sure how much I "liked" the book, but I enjoyed reading it. Go really grows on you. He's brilliant. He's intense. And it's so endearing watching him discover Nyla. Thanks to her educational background and experience, she knows how be with him. They really are an interesting couple.
