"There is only one bond that I trust: between a woman and her sisters. We never take our eyes off each other. In love and in rivalry, we always think of each other."     When Katherine of Aragon is brought to the Tudor court as a young bride, the oldest princess, Margaret, takes her measure.  With one look, each knows the other for a rival, an ally, a pawn, destined - with Margaret's younger sister Mary - to a sisterhood unique in all the world. The three sisters will become the queens of England, Scotland and France.     United by family loyalties and affections, the three queens find themselves set against each other.  Katherine commands an army against Margaret and kills her husband James IV of Scotland. But Margaret's boy becomes heir to the Tudor throne when Katherine loses her son. Mary steals the widowed Margaret's proposed husband, but when Mary is widowed it is her secret marriage for love that is the envy of the others. As they experience betrayals, dangers, loss and passion, the three sisters find that the only constant in their perilous lives is their special bond, more powerful than any man, even a king.… (mais)

Being kind with rating....too long and detailed so it gets boring and annoying.Margaret is not sympathetic as the main character for most of book.Title very misleading,it's all centred on Margaret.Three short sections are affecting, and two characters quite likable,Authors note at end very interesting. Absolutely loved this book. Not much known about Queen Margaret of Scotland and I was just fascinated by the story. Finished it in a week - was quite the page turner. Philippa Gregory does not disappoint! ( )

I found the title of this novel rather misleading: with a title like that, I expected equal focus on three characters, but this novel is about Margaret Tudor and to only some extent about her relationship with her sister Mary and her sister-in-law Katherine of Aragon. My other major issue with this book with this book is the first-person narration. It's something I've become increasingly allergic to in general, but especially with characters who don't seem to be given to introspection. The effect was a major rush through often very short stops at stages of Margaret's life. In her author's note at the end, Philippa Gregory explains how the sources on Margaret's life are limited, and how she went for first-person narration in the present to give it some immediacy, but it didn't work for me. This one took me a while to finish - it was pretty slow. I didn't enjoy it as much as I have some of her other books. ( )

James has a profound interest in the workings of things, and wherever we go he is off to bell towers to see the mechanism of clocks, or to water mills to see a new way of loading wheat into the grinding stones. In one little village they have a wind pump to get the water out of the ditches and he spends half the day with the Dutchman who built it, going up and down the sluices and up and down the stairs to the stalls until he understand completely how it works.
The rules of writing history mean that a historian can only speculate about [the subject's] emotions, but a novelist is allowed, indeed, obliged to recreate a version of them.... historical fiction ... takes the historical record and turns it inside out; the inner world explains the outer record.
