(  ) joanra21 | Mar 18, 2023 | Banner’s descriptive writing makes it easy to picture the people and places on the island: “Strange it was, that in this island where everybody knew your business before you knew it, where the widows burdened you with prayers and the elderly scopa players scolded and the old fishermen knew you by name before you were even born, it was possible still for a person to be as deep as the ocean, as unfathomable as the dark beyond the bar’s four walls.” It is a slow-paced novel about life in an isolated environment. The focus is on the Esposito family members and their struggles. The reader will likely appreciate some generations of characters more than others. For me, the early parts of the novel, covering the first two generations, are the most enjoyable. After a while the disputes, gossip, and grudges can wear a bit thin. It is a pleasant story that depicts the ups and downs of life. (  ) Castlelass | Oct 30, 2022 | Amedeo Esposito comes to the small island of Castellemare in the early 1900's as the Doctor in Residence. The story follows his life and the generations of Esposito's that follow. There is nothing deep about this book, no hidden message. Just the history of the world, and these families who seem so remote from it all. Catherine Banner's writing pulled me in after the first few pages and kept me involved with the characters, loving them all. There is the Esposito Family and then there are the other residence of this very small island-The old women who live for their gossip-the old men playing cards in the bar, the children growing up in a world that is changing, and never being aware of those changes until months, sometimes years later. Then there is Santa' Agata, the Patron Saint of the Island, does she really preform miracles, or is it just the faith of these islanders that makes you believe in them? After I read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society I wanted to go that place-no other book since has done that for me-this one did-it's too bad that Castellemare is not real-I would go there in a minute. Die Frau des Conte bringt ihr Kind zur Welt und beschuldigt Amedeo, der Vater zu sein. Auch seine Frau Pina bekommt in der gleichen Nacht ihr Baby. Durch den Skandal darf er nicht mehr als Arzt praktizieren. Er macht aus dem ,,Haus am Rande der Nacht“ eine Bar, die er mit seiner Frau betreibt und sorgt so für das Auskommen der Familie. Die Bar wird zum Treffpunkt für alle, die auf der Insel leben. Es gibt nichts, was hier nicht besprochen wird. Aber es wird auch zum Mittelpunkt seine Familie und ihre Nachkommen. Seine Tochter Maria-Grazia führt die Bar später weiter. Amedeo ist als Findelkind im Waisenhaus in Florenz aufgewachsen. Doch dann sorgt der Arzt Esposito für ihn und ermöglicht ihm ein Medizinstudium. Doch erst auf der Insel findet er eine Anstellung. Doch der Skandal sorgt dafür, dass er diese Anstellung dann auch wieder verliert. „Die langen Tage von Castellamare“ ist ein wundervolles Buch, das in einem tollen und poetischen Schreibstil geschrieben ist. Ich habe mich wohl gefühlt auf dieser kleinen Insel mit seinen Bewohnern und konnte an ihrem Leben teilnehmen. Jeder der Charaktere war auf seine Art besonders und sie harren hier aus – abgeschieden vom Rest der Welt. Dennoch hat das Weltgeschehen auch Einfluss auf das Leben der Bewohner.
