"The galaxy has seen great empires rise and fall. Planets have shattered and been remade. Amongst the ruins of alien civilizations, building our own from the rubble, humanity still thrives. And there are vast fortunes to be made, if you know where to find them ... Captain Rackamore and his crew do. It's their business to find the tiny, enigmatic worlds which have been hidden away, booby-trapped, surrounded with layers of protection - and to crack them open for the ancient relics and barely-remembered technologies inside. But while they ply their risky trade with integrity, not everyone is so scrupulous. Adrana and Fura Ness are the newest members of Rackamore's crew, signed on to save their family from bankruptcy. Only Rackamore has enemies, and there might be more waiting for them in space than adventure and fortune: the fabled and feared Bosa Sennen in particular. Revenger is a science fiction adventure story set in the rubble of our solar system in the dark, distant future - a tale of space pirates, buried treasure and phantom weapons, of unspeakable hazards and single-minded heroism ... and of vengeance . ."--… (mais)

Shadow & Claw: The First Half of The Book of the New Sun por Gene Wolfe (LamontCranston)
LamontCranston: In a manner very similar to Gene Wolfes New Sun advanced technologies are described in archaic terms and there is a deep mystery hidden behind the lost knowledge of the worlds origin.

Oh dear. I do like Alastair Reynolds' other books, but this seems to be a mistake of some kind. The characters are comic book, the plot is plodding, and the dialogue is faux-cockney. Disappointing. ( )

I waffled on whether or not to give this 4 stars. I really enjoyed it, but I'm trying to be a little more careful with my rating scheme. But in the end, I decided that perhaps my rating might help someone decide to read Revenger. And that would be a good thing.
Reynolds has laid out an interesting world here, one that I'm pretty sure he has figured out in detail, but which he does not explain all in this novel. There are still mysteries to unveil in future books set there. What I find most fascinating is the way he has set things up such that a mash-up of Regency manners, pirate adventures, and space opera seem so plausible. Seriously. Give it a go. Like me, you may find that you have to get halfway in before it really grabs you and won't let go. So be patient. ( )

This feels like the origin story for an upcoming superhero cartoon ( )

Not the greatest story Alastair has ever told.   It's all very young adult-ish stuff, and it's really not anything like what i love about Alastair's usual sci-fi.

But, i suppose, every writer may wish to have a try at some YA stuff occasionally.   I just really hope that Alastair doesn't ever do it again, thank you.

I mean, let's be serious, a child who isn't even old enough to leave home, escapes and takes on the system's most feared and devastating pirate?   Really?   And adults just fall over themselves to do her bidding?

But, as i'm committed to reading the whole of Alastair's writings, i must continue with this farcical trilogy and see where it leads.

So next up it will be Shadow Captain.

Bye for now. ( )

Nice language that strangely feels Victorian and suggests pirate stories like Treasure Island. ( )
