The one word I can use to describe "Heroes of the Frontier" by Dave Eggers is "frustrated"--except for the moving ending. I like the stories I read to have good character development and a well-developed plot. I love the stories I read to be well written. "Heroes" was none of these, but it was interesting, very interesting. ( ) A fun, fast-paced book about a woman who takes her two young children as far away as possible to escape the pressures of real-life crushing in on her. Along the way she celebrates, stumbles, and unexpectedly discovers depths and amazing strength she never knew she/they possessed. I highly recommend this book! Here's another magnificent and quirky book from Dave Eggers. It made me seriously bust out laughing at many times, and nearly curl up in a corner and cry at others. About that crying part: there are times to read certain books and other times not to read them, so if you have recently become a single parent or if your life is presently feeling tattered to shreds, this might or might not be the right book for you right now -- that is unless you need something to help you curl up in a corner and cry and laugh out loud at the same time. I stand in awe of Eggers' ability to conjure & embody such a deeply lovable & fallible human being as Josie, the protagonist mother of this story. Her love for her children, 8-year-old thoughtful Paul and 5-year-old impish Ana, is unwavering, even as she falls with them into and out of completely ridiculous and frequently dangerous (and always avoidable) circumstances in their trek through Alaska as wildfires burn all around. But the larger story is one of Josie trying to understand where she is in her life, how she got here, and where she sees the future for herself. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica

Josie and her husband have split up, she's been sued by a former patient and lost her dental practice, and she's grieving the death of a young man senselessly killed. When her ex asks to take the children to meet his new fiancée's family, Josie makes a run for it, figuring Alaska is about as far as she can get without a passport. Josie and her kids, Paul and Ana, rent a rattling old RV named the Chateau, and at first their trip feels like a vacation: They see bears and bison, they eat hot dogs cooked on a bonfire, and they spend nights parked along icy cold rivers in dark forests. But as they drive, pushed north by the ubiquitous wildfires, Josie is chased by enemies both real and imagined, past mistakes pursuing her tiny family, even to the very edge of civilization.
