"Natasha: I'm a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I'm definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won't be my story. Daniel: I've always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents' high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store--for both of us. The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?"--… (mais)

Natasha is on her way to Manhattan to meet with someone at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services building in a desperate attempt to stop the deportation orders for her family. She has less than 12 hours before her family must leave the U.S. and go back to Jamaica.

Daniel is on his way to Manhattan to attend an interview with a Yale alumnus. His Korean parents have planned his future-Med school at Yale. He does not want to go to med school. He wants to be a poet. He has no interest in going to the interview, but he feels he has to follow his parents’ plan for him.

Through a series of coincidences Natasha and Daniel meet. For Daniel, it seems like destiny. Being the dreamer that he is, he is convinced that coincidences happen for a reason. Natasha is more fact-based and doesn’t believe in fate. She only believes in science and facts. Daniel tries to prove to Natasha that science is involved in coincidences. He makes a bet that they will fall in love before the end of the day. Natasha does not share the fact that before long she will likely be leaving the U.S. As the day progresses, both of them find their beliefs challenged.

Playing on the theme of coincidence, the book takes some little asides to share bits and pieces of stories about some minor characters. The characters seem to not play a role in Natasha’s and Daniel’s story, but the parts that they do play influence the story. Throughout the book, the point of view switches between Daniel, Natasha, minor characters, and an omniscient narrator who drops random bits of history, trivia, and information about the minor characters. The range of narrators in the book adds depth to the storyline. ( )

It was cute I guess, and I appreciated the intelligent tidbits about immigration, various physics stuff, and how everyone has their own story. Daniel was also kind of refreshing as a male lead who's sensitive and not a stereotypical super-competent edgy hot guy. But ultimately I didn't really find the instalove thing super well-done or realistic. ( )

This is such a tough one to review! On the one hand, I absolutely loved the writing, the snippets into other people’s lives, the representation and the themes. On the other hand, I couldn’t get behind the main relationship.

I feel like the relationships would have worked so much better as an unlikely friendship rather than love at first sight. Two people trying to help each other, experiencing something so out of the ordinary, would have made so much more sense than somehow falling in love within hours. It just didn’t ring true, at all. In fact, I think I almost would have preferred if it was a friendship only for that one day, as well. Some people are meant to come into our lives and stay, some are meant to teach us something and leave, etc. That old thing.

I would definitely reread this or check out more by Nicola Yoon, just for the sake of the side stories more than anything, but otherwise this was more of a “yeah, I read that” three stars, because of the insta-love.

If you took that out? Easily could have been four to five stars. ( )

It’s a nice book for teenagers and the ending is somewhat different and I liked it albeit a bit cheesy ( )

To say I enjoyed this book would be the definition of an understatement. I devoured this book. I started it one morning and finished it that evening. The writing was truly addicting, and the short chapters added to that.

This book had so many things that I enjoyed about it. There was no spice, less swear words than other books, and my personal favorite was the multiple POVs. Most of the time, books are told in only the points of view of the main characters. In this book, however, almost any time a character was brought up who truly had a story behind them, they got a few pages to tell their part.

What I just said was just the plot devices and writing devices that I liked. The plot itself was fantastic! Love at first sight with only a day to spend together. Learning about their heritage and family history was incredible, and it made the characters seem that much more realistic. I don't want to say too much because I went into this book only knowing what was written on the back of it. One final thing to say, however, is I am not the type of person who normally can see the story happening like I am in the book, and it happened for me in this book.

I would truly recommend this book to anyone I met and honestly can give it 5 stars. I am not a crier and I almost cried, just to give you a warning if you are easy to tears. But please, TRY THIS BOOK! ( )
