When Sofia meets Franz Oswald, the handsome, charming leader of a mysterious New Age movement, she's dazzled and intrigued. Visiting his headquarters on Fog Island, Sofia's struck by the beautiful mansion overlooking the sea, the gardens, the sense of peace and the purposefulness of the people who live there. And she can't ignore the attraction she feels for Franz. So she agrees to stay, just for a while. But as summer gives way to winter, and the dense fog from which the island draws its name sets in, it becomes clear that Franz rules the island with an iron fist. No phones or computers are allowed. Contact with the mainland is severed. Electric fences surround the grounds. And Sofia begins to realize how very alone she is and that no one ever leaves Fog Island...… (mais)

ARGH, so torn between two or three stars, but I supposed I'll be nice. This time. I don't know. At its best it's almost worthy of four stars, but at its worst it barely rises above two, so yeah, I'm not really sure here. Playing it safe with three.

So the first 150 - 200 pages I was not into it at all. I don't think the writing is particularly good and it is way too obvious that the author used her own experience of living with a sect in the US as a base for it. Most characters are referred to by their last names, which is not something we do in Sweden. The main character is in her 20s and she does not sound like she's in her 20s, she sounds like a much older person recalling her 20s. And so on and so on.

I also did not buy the evil sect leader, he seemed almost cartoonish at times and his back story made my think of Lord Voldemort ... but not in a good way. I would rather have seen him actually be charming, seen him charm me, the reader, as he charmed Sofia, so I'd understand her better.

After that, it became VERY good though and it was very hard for me to put the book down. Maybe I didn't buy the way Sofia got caught up in the sect, but once she was in it, the author's first hand knowledge of sects REALLY paid off and it was very believable how Sofia couldn't just leave and how she kept lying to her friends and family (or rather, not telling the truth), while also feeling upset that people just didn't get what they were trying to do. That part was good and as I said, it was hard to put down and stressed me out on many occassion because ARRGHHH, what's gonna happen now!?

Sadly, though, the last 100 pages had many of the same problems as the first 100. It didn't seem believeable anymore, I'm not buying that someone can make a detailed confession of their murders and then go to the newspapers and be like "eehh, it's a book, yeah, totally, this chick stole my book so now we need to make national headlines about her disappearing ... with my book!". Lolwut??? I also liked how she pulled a Bob Panini and fled to Norrland for lack of better options ...

The fact that this is gonna be a trilogy makes me wanna detract a star though. As a stand-alone it's pretty good, but as the first of three? Eehhh, not so much. Will most likely not read the sequels. ( )

When Sofia is asked to come to Fog Island and create a library by Franz Oswald, the handsome and charming leader of the New Age organisation Via Terra, she thinks it is the opportunity of a lifetime. Tucked away on a beautiful secluded property, the staff of Via Terra live and work catering to celebrities and the wealthy who are looking to find inner harmony by following Oswald’s self-help theses, which promote simplicity, pureness, and inner fortitude.

At first the strict rules against technologies and communication with people outside of Via Terra seem odd to Sofia. However, after seeing the other employees unwavering devotion to Franz and his vision, Sofia cannot help but find herself justifying these decisions. Being surrounded by the picturesque grounds and serene environment reassures her that this way of life is good for her; her work is meaningful, and she can let go of the turmoil of home where she is being cyber stalked by an ex-boyfriend.

However, slowly Franz’s requests of the staff become more demanding, and his interest in Sophie more intense. As living condition begin to deteriorate, more and more rules come into force, and punishments escalate, it becomes clear that Franz may not be the person he claims. Sofia begins to wonder if maybe has made a terrible mistake. Now intertwined in the Via Terra organisation and the relationships she has made, it becomes clear that leaving may not be as easy as simply walking away.

Written by former scientologist Mariette Lindstein “The Cult on Fog Island” explores the insidious conditioning used by an organisation to slowly strip away identity, independence, and relationships. I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the next installment of this series. ( )
