I am not normally a fan of free verse poetry, but I really liked the way Angelou worded these poems. This collection is touching and moving and beautiful. (

I rehearsed you,
The way you had of singing
On a breeze,
While a sob lay
At the root of your song.

It certainly has depth, but overall the poetry is a bit too unwieldy and flowery for my tastes. Well worth reading though. (

Uplifting and full of hope, this wholesome and nurturing collection of poetry - my first experience of Angelou's poems - is at times grand in its scale and its range, its powerful imagery evoking big booming senses of nature, traversing humanity's capacity for cruelty but also for compassion and goodness, and is also at times sweet with a hint of cheeky irreverence to the idea of poetry. Honesty and simplicity in poetry form. (
