"The classic short story--now in full color. Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" continues to thrill and unsettle readers nearly seven decades after it was first published. By turns puzzling and harrowing, it raises troubling questions about conformity, tradition, and the specter of ritualized violence that haunts even the most bucolic, peaceful village. This graphic adaptation, published in time for Jackson's centennial, allows readers to experience "The Lottery" as never before, or discover it anew. The visual artist--and Jackson's grandson--Miles Hyman has crafted an eerie vision of the hamlet where the tale unfolds, its inhabitants, and the unforgettable ritual they set into motion. His four-color, meticulously detailed panels create a noirish atmosphere that adds a new dimension of dread to the original tale. Perfectly timed to the current resurgence of interest in Jackson and her work, Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery": A Graphic Adaptation masterfully reimagines her iconic story with a striking visual narrative"-- "A graphic adaptation of the classic short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson"--… (mais)

A great comic adaptation of The Lottery by Shirley Jackson's very own grandson. Superb. ( )

Great adaption of a classic. I finished this in one sitting. I remember first seeing this short story as a kid and assuming it was an old boring story about the lottery as I knew it with the winner gaining a monetary prize. Boy were my eyes opened! ( )

I'm obsessed with this graphic novel adaptation of Shirley Jackson's haunting short story, "The Lottery." The story begins with everyone in the village gathering for the annual Lottery. As the they run through a roll call of village families to ensure everyone has been able to attend, the villagers make small talk with their neighbors, the sounds of friendly chat filling the air. But the day is soon about to turn, and not everyone is happy once the Lottery begins.

This graphic novel is so powerful because of the amount of text it utilizes throughout. The story begins slowly with dozens of pages containing barely a few words of text as everyone prepares for the even. As they begin to gather, though, the dialogue increases, filling the pages with pleasant conversation and atmosphere. This pleasant facade continues through the story's dark end, juxtaposing the danger of tradition that the story tells with the bliss of ignorance that the pictures portray. This is an excellent read for anyone middle school or older! ( )

While I've never read the short story, I am of course familiar with the plot. It seems as though this adaptations, lovingly rendered by Jackson's grandson, is faithful and true. ( )
