Much like "Desert Solitare", there are parts of this that seem to drag and go on tangents that don't contribute much to the story. But its still a good story with a great ending. ( )

Not Abbey's finest novel but his last and the only one I hadn't read. Of course he zings everyone in sight. ( )

Very poor follow-up to the Monkey Wrench Gang. The characters have all changed and gone down less interesting, less noble, and less effective paths. The story line itself is fractured and verging on the pointless- seemingly more a smashed together collection of scenes in environmental activism that Abbey had witnessed over the years rather than any coherent plot. If you enjoyed Monkey Wrench, you may not want to bother with Hayduke... ( )

A great sequel to a great book. The Monkeywrench Gang, well 3 out of 4 of them anyway, attempt to settle down and use more traditional ways of fighting for the land they love. We find Seldom Scene Smith at environmental hearings about uranium mining and exploitation of American land by foreign companies. Doc Sarvis is working at the local childrens clinic dealing with the (coincidentally?) high number of cancer and leukemia cases near the uranium mines and downwind from the nuclear test sites in Nevada. Bonnie has settled down as Doc’s wife and is trying to be a good mother. Hayduke is presumed dead even with the continued monkeywrenching attributed to the Earth First!’ers and other “radicals”.

Abbey’s protagonists come out of retirement and probation to take on the GOLIATH, the largest earthmover ever built, as it marches up the canyonlands to stripmine one of their beloved canyons. ( )
