An emotional thriller and a suburban crime story that will keep listeners guessing until the end. On the surface, it tells the tale of the struggling single mother of a high-school pitcher, a shy kid so athletically talented that he's being recruited for a full-ride scholarship to a Division I college, with a future in major-league baseball. But the mother fears that she's losing her grip on her son because he's being lured down a darker path by one of his teammates, a secretly disturbed young man from an affluent family, whose excellent grades and fun-loving manner conceal his violent criminal plans. Add a handsome stranger who comes to town and infiltrates the high school, posing as a teacher but with a hidden agenda all his own.… (mais)

Another great book from Lisa Scottoline! This one tells the story of Chris Brennan, who moves into a small town and starts teaching at the local high school and helping coach the HS baseball team. Along the way, he starts developing friendships with some of the kids on the team and develops a romantic interest in the mom of one of the kids. The problem is, everything about Chris is a lie. (No spoilers, but the latter two thirds of the book explain what is really going on—completely pulling the rug out from what you believe is happening in the first third)

Written with Scottoline’s characteristic flair for writing and building suspense, this book is a great read. It includes just the right amount of detail and keeps you interested until the end. If you enjoy suspense novels with interesting stories and plot twists, this one is a good read! ( )

A struggling single mother has a shy kid so athletically talented that he's being recruited for a full-ride scholarship to a Division I college, with a future in major-league baseball. But the mother fears that she's losing her grip on her son because he's being lured down a darker path by one of his teammates, a young man from an affluent family, whose excellent grades and fun-loving manner conceal his violent criminal plans. Add a handsome stranger who comes to town and infiltrates the high school, posing as a teacher but with a hidden agenda all his own.

This story moved along at a steady pace with likeable and fairly believable characters with lots of secrets. Then it picked up quite a bit during the last third when things started happening to many of the characters. The ending was a little too over the top. Although I didn’t get fully drawn into the story, it was entertaining. ( )

This is a hard book to review without giving away any plot points! In true Lisa Scottoline fashion, nothing is as it seems and everyone has a secret. Unlike other Scottoline novels, however, this one fell flat. I liked the book but I think the plot point was revealed too early and the twists that came after weren't that surprising to me. As a matter of fact, I think I enjoyed the book MORE before the first major plot twist was revealed than I did the rest of the book.

All of that aside, I still think it was worth a read and I would recommend it, especially if you like a thriller. I think I just expected a different outcome (and wanted one) than I got once things got moving.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.com This in no way impacts my review. ( )

My first book by this author. Definitely will read more from her. Good story. Some slower parts, but picked up speed nicely. ( )
