Returning to the lives of women, young and no so young, working in the munitions factories on the South Coast of England during World War II, Rosie Archer’s Gunpowder and Glory Girls explores that boundary between honest and dishonest livings in times of struggle. Hints of the sixties are born in the forties. Abuse in various forms, with various consequences, wounds the lives of women, while kindness and generosity starts the road to healing. Gangsters and helpers, dancers and laborers, true love and true love betrayed all find their place in this novel. Lots of detail is given in backstory and conversation, giving a true and evocative picture of time and place. It’s an enjoyable, uplifting read, and its message of kindness in the face of cruelty is one for all ages. Disclosure: I read it on a trip to England. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica
