I got this book for my husband and daughter, who expressed all the enthusiasm possible for running an obstacle race before they had a book on it, and none afterwards. But it looks like a great book, despite them. It is very thorough, covering everything from training clothing, to food plans, to specific exercises, to how to overcome specific race obstacles (like a vertical log balance, not reluctance to get out of bed at 5 a.m. to train, although as a matter of fact, they cover that sort of thing too) to training plans. It includes an assessment section, so that you can check your own level of fitness before starting to train, and build your training plan accordingly. It also includes a timeline for race day preparation, and a list of items that you should take with you on your obstacle race. The publisher, Human Kinetics, usually does a pretty stand out job with exercise books. One thing that I really like that is consistent across the series, is the way that they pay particular attention to form in the various exercises and tasks of the sport, and give you not only an idea of what you should be striving for, but how to correct any errors you are making. If I accepted the challenge, I would diligently follow the entire book for increasing strength, endurance and agility. The chapter on Mental Toughness would be essential for me. Great book for beginners and experienced racers.I shared the book with a professional fitness trainer who was very excited about it - especially the suggestions for collecting supplies and building Spartan obstacles. She has done the Tough Mountain Challenge*, but never the Spartan*, so she is looking forward to training for this new challenge. Topics not only include exercises but also, nutrition, pre and post meals and recovery. Likewise, tips on conquering specific course challenges, injury prevention, picking your race and mental strategies for your best performance. Like all the Human Kinetics books it is printed on high quality paper with lots of color photos and easy to use graphs and charts.
