"From the New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove, My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry, and Britt-Marie Was Here, comes a poignant, charming novel about a forgotten town fractured by scandal, and the amateur hockey team that might just change everything. Winning a junior ice hockey championship might not mean a lot to the average person, but it means everything to the residents of Beartown, a community slowly being eaten alive by unemployment and the surrounding wilderness. A victory like this would draw national attention to the ailing town: it could attract government funding and an influx of talented athletes who would choose Beartown over the big nearby cities. A victory like this would certainly mean everything to Amat, a short, scrawny teenager who is treated like an outcast everywhere but on the ice; to Kevin, a star player just on the cusp of securing his golden future in the NHL; and to Peter, their dedicated general manager whose own professional hockey career ended in tragedy. At first, it seems like the team might have a shot at fulfilling the dreams of their entire town. But one night at a drunken celebration following a key win, something happens between Kevin and the general manager's daughter--and the next day everything seems to have changed. Accusations are made and, like ripples on a pond, they travel through all of Beartown, leaving no resident unaffected. With so much riding on the success of the team, the line between loyalty and betrayal becomes difficult to discern. At last, it falls to one young man to find the courage to speak the truth that it seems no one else wants to hear. Fredrik Backman knows that we are forever shaped by the places we call home, and in this emotionally powerful, sweetly insightful story, he explores what can happen when we carry the heavy weight of other people's dreams on our shoulders"--… (mais)

I hate Fredrik Backman. He can't write worth a damn. He never makes me feel anything and he never writes about anything I can relate to. He's a big jerky jerk stupidface and he's certainly not a must click favorite author.

But really, he's done it again. He's managed to make me cry on the train in the morning. Beartown evoked so many feelings in me that I almost feel like I need to read it again just to process everything but at the same time, I'm too gutted from the first time around. This book needs to be read, especially given today's, well, everything.

It's a good thing I have some smut planned for my next read because this one needs time to digest. ( )

This was a hard read because you can see that something bad is going to happen from a long way off and you just have to wait for it. And you like everybody so you don't want them to be involved in the bad thing. Even the assholes are relatively sympathetic in the first part of the book. They are no less assholes. But, Backman shows you their context and, even though you don't like them, you, at least, understand them.

I love Backman's writing. He tells his stories well and even his minor characters are truly 3 dimensional people.

While this story is wrapped in hockey, it could just as well have been any other team sport in any small town in the world. ( )

This is the 3rd book that I have read by Backman and I have enjoyed them all. This particular book deals with so many different issues and characters. The basic story surrounds a small town in Sweeden(Beartown) that is slowly dying. It has built its identify around its hockey teams. At this time the team has a great Junior star and the team is in the semi finals for the national junior championship. This will hopefully revive the fortunes of the town. Without giving too much away, it deals with so many issues of loyalty, bullying, stereotypes etc. You name it and this book touches on it. It just shows how easy it is to be dismissive of people when they point the finger at the star and with so much relying on the star. Backman has an interesting style that might reflect the translation. The book is now a series on HBO which I believe changes it around. I recommend reading the book before seeing it. Again, Backman is a terrific writer and this is a very worthwhile read. ( )

Another well told story from Fedrik Backman. This one doesn't have the humour of some of his other books. It covers darker topics and covers them well. ( )

Beartown is a tiny community nestled deep in the forest but with a big dream. The entire town talks, dreams and lives only for one thing, i.e., Hockey.

Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semi-finals, and they actually have a shot at winning. All the hopes and dreams of this place now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys.

But then, Maya, the daughter of the General Manager of the Beartown hockey team, is raped by one of the team's star players and the whole town is thrown into turmoil.

According to me the most important message in this book was loyalty. But the question was: Loyalty to your team or Loyalty to humanity?

This was an incredible story with amazing characterization. Each character along with their own personal background was equally important to the entire story. It is difficult for me to choose a favorite because I enjoyed reading about all of them irrespective of their flaws.

The situations faced and the questions arising in this book are all important. It isn’t something new but the way it has been presented, is definitely thought provoking. It shows the amount of courage, difficulty and willingness that one needs to have to stand up and do the right thing.

Overall, an excellent and emotional read! Highly Recommended! ( )

The bestselling author of A Man Called Ove tells a poignant story of a hockey town paralyzed by scandal. Jobs are disappearing and Beartown is slowly dying, so for its citizens, hockey is everything. Backman asks, “Why does everyone care about hockey? Because hockey tells stories.” This is the story not just of hockey, but of a 15-year-old named Maya Andersson, whose father, Peter, the general manager of the hockey club, loves hockey, but loves his family more. Seventeen-year-old Kevin Erdahl is the star of Beartown, with a chance to go professional. One night, after a huge win, Maya goes to a raucous party at Kevin’s house and is thrilled at his attention, but things get out of hand, and what takes place changes Beartown forever. Lest readers think hockey is the star here, it’s Backman’s rich characters that steal the show, and his deft handling of tragedy and its effects on an insular town. While the story is dark at times, love, sacrifice, and the bonds of friendship and family shine through, ultimately offering hope and even redemption. Backman veers close to the saccharine, but readers may be too spellbound to notice.

For my grandmother, Saga Backman, who taught me to love sports. What a quiet life I would have lived without her. I hope that the big bar in heaven serves proper dry martinis, and that they always show Wimbledon on the big screen. I miss you.

And for Neda Shafti-Backman, my funniest, smartest, more arguentative best friend who picks me up when I need it, and keeps my feet on the grund when I deserve it.
