WINNER OF THE 2017 COSTA NOVEL AWARD A GUARDIAN BOOK OF THE YEAR AN FT BOOK OF THE YEAR A TLS BOOK OF THE YEAR A TELEGRAPH BOOK OF THE YEAR From the award-winning author of If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things. Reservoir 13 tells the story of many lives haunted by one family's loss. Midwinter in the early years of this century. A teenage girl on holiday has gone missing in the hills at the heart of England. The villagers are called up to join the search, fanning out across the moors as the police set up roadblocks and a crowd of news reporters descends on their usually quiet home. Meanwhile, there is work that must still be done: cows milked, fences repaired, stone cut, pints poured, beds made, sermons written, a pantomime rehearsed. The search for the missing girl goes on, but so does everyday life. As it must. An extraordinary novel of cumulative power and grace, Reservoir 13 explores the rhythms of the natural world and the repeated human gift for violence, unfolding over thirteen years as the aftershocks of a stranger's tragedy refuse to subside. A novel exploring the lives of people who live in a village in the Lake District and the impact on them after a girl went missing. The structure of the novel is unique, all written in the past tense with no dialogue between the characters, which creates a dreamy, poetic feel to the story and adds to the mystery of what might have happened to the girl. It give a good insight of village life and concentrates on various characters and their habits, creating a series of short stories within the whole novel. The book ends without the mystery being solved. ( )

I almost dnf around page 50, but I’m glad that I pushed through and finished this. I won’t say I loved it, but it is very well crafted and something unexpected. While the “missing girl” element is important, the story is not really about that and it’s certainly not a mystery.

This is more like Akenfield plus the Up documentaries plus A Dance to the Music of Time, maybe? At first I didn’t really connect to the characters because there were so many of them and I couldn’t keep them straight. But over time, it swelled and built, and by the end I felt downright emotional about how beautifully the author built these simple lives into something so true-feeling. I know this village; I have lived there. But in the end I too would just be a few sentences in the long life of the place. ( )

Very much the Peak District although not pinned down where the village is. For the first few chapters I was expecting (and looking forward to) a sudden change of tone but then I steadied and really began to to enjoy the immersion in village life. It's not poetry but the content has rhythm in itself. Thoroughly recommend it. ( )

I found this book beautifully written but frustrating in its conclusion.

Edit: I just looked at my previous Goodreads review for another book by this author and apparently had the same feelings about that one! ( )

Almost like a collection of short stories about the people in a small town, except instead of consecutive tales, they are woven together by year starting with the disappearance of a young tourist. The interspersed nature vignettes and the ethereal narration (all-knowing yet remote and unemotional) creates quite an atmosphere to the novel. It is so captivating even though you never get to know any one character really well. The sparse but significant details of the various stories are amazingly crafted. What a work of art! ( )
