The update she's made to her Fat Flush plans seem to use the latest science. It's a smart plan that focuses on using different foods that what you might typically choose, but they're all available at your local grocery store or farmer's market.
Gittleman focuses on detoxifying the gallbladder, liver, and lymphatic system as a key element to weight loss and overall health. Most importantly, she explains why in language that's easy to understand. Although she does discuss (and sell) supplements, the tools for detoxifying and nourishes these vital organs are primarily healthy foods, herbs, and spices. The information about how to keep your bile healthy was particularly helpful, since my husband just had his gallbladder (which stores and manages bile) removed.
The Plan has three phases, starting with a three-day intense detox. I cannot imagine venturing on such a strict liquid-only cleanse during the work week. In fact, I think it's irresponsible to encourage a three-day cleanse without even suggesting that people do this during a down time. From what I've experienced and been taught, going all liquid should not be combined with every day levels of activity.
After completing Phase 1, the "Fat Flusher" goes on to Phases 2 and 3. These two phases have lots of menu plans and recipes, since they may potentially stay on them for a long time. However restrictive it may feel, my guess is that it would be possible to maintain this lifestyle with the added motivation of weight and health changes. The way Gittleman writes the plan, there's wiggle room for adding back in dairy and carbs as your program progresses.
A lot of the entree recipes focus on roasting, baking, and stir-frying. But never fear, they include healthy fats and most sound delicious. I was especially intrigued by the idea of Savory Spaghetti Squash Pancakes, Pâté for All Seasons, Ruby Rich Dressing (using beets!), and Coconut Creme Brûlée.
All in all, an interesting approach that I'm likely to test in the coming weeks and months.
