I'm not a Bond fan and the only other i've read is Casino Royale. This is better and would have been 4 stars but the buildup is, as is often the case, better than the pay off.

In Casino Royale Bond is shown (unintentionally i'm assuming) to be an incompetent, traitorous, rapist, in this he's a bit more competent although he still manages to ignore a lot of suspicious things.
Bond doesn't think about raping anyone this time but don't worry he has a new BFF who is a confirmed rapist so thats just super.... :| . I'm seriously wondering if any police force has looked into Flemings personal life.

Anyway, due to my aversion to bond i was quite pleased he doesn't make his apperance here until about half-way through. The writing is good and very detailed which, while very occasionally annoying overall adds a lot to the flavour.

As i said things go a little poorer towards the climax especially since we get a lot of time building up a villian who doesn't do much in the end.
I think there's also an error, a lot of effort is put into trying to cover up some gunshots but there was already a gunshot before that which wasn't covered up at all and people should have heard. Maybe i missed something.

Overall, well written... very alive thanks to its detailed nature and some nice twists but not quite 4 stars for me due to exposition dumping. ( )

My favorite Bond novel so far. It has a great plot and characters and leaves a major cliffhanger at the end. Like all the books up to now it differs from the movie in major ways. ( )

This is the last of the Bond books that I have at home and I decided to read it now as I needed something entertaining. I picked it, and the previous books up at a charity shop so I will now have to be on the lookout for the next ones in the series. I was very happy to discover that the film and book follow the same story. Some of the previous books have completely different story lines to the movies and From Russia With Love is one of my favourite movies.

Unusually, Bond doesn't actually make an appearance until about a third of the way into the book and we see inside the murky world of SMERSH. Although there is an element of cold war cliche to the descriptions it is a great start to the book. The main players are introduced and we see a little into their respective background's. We are also treated to the feelings of suspicion that everyone in SMERSH falls under from each other.

From the moment Bond comes into the picture the story flies along at a tremendous pace. It really is the best of what makes the Bond books so good. There is the beautiful girl, Tatiana Romanova, who falls head over heels in love with him. There intelligent foreign spies, assisted by the muscled needed to try an defeat Bond. There is the glamorous travel and fine dining which is superbly described by Fleming.

This is a great book and even though I know the story well I still found it very entertaining. It is as good, perhaps even better than Casino Royale. ( )

Like all of the James Bond books this is not a classic of intelligence fiction. However, our hero, rigorously self indulgent, goes through the stages of the heroic journey and, purified by suffering, triumphs over evil, both external, and internal. It is not, in this instance particularly interesting. ( )

From Russia With Love (1957) (Bond #5) by Ian Fleming. One of the more sophisticated of the Bond tales, it is also one of the best. We don’t meet Bond until the second portion of the book. Section one is the SMERSH plot to undermine British Intelligence. They hope for a coup that will destroy the British belief in the infallibility of there Intel organizations. Further, the plot is to destroy one of their top agents and the name that comes up from several sectors is Bond.
The Russians have a killing machine in “Red” Grant, defector from the British Army. A perfect physical specimen and full time sociopath, Grant is the chosen weapon to will destroy Bond. To assist and guide him we are introduced to Rosa Klebb, evil toad with tricky shoes.
The plot is well formed by their mastermind, the lure is set with a much desired crypto-machine, and the addition of a beautiful traitor willing to defect with the machine to the West is the topping, but it all hinges on Bond. The girl is “in love” with Bond and she will only trust him to aid her.
M knows it is a trap. Bond knows it is a trap. All involved on the West side of the equation knows it is a trap. But what if it isn’t? What if they can get their hands on the Soviet machine? It just might be worth whatever trap has been set.
The result is a daring adventure from England to Turkey and onto the Orient Express. Bond is left to fend for himself, but he isn’t certain of what trap he is to walk into, or if he can escape with his life let alone the prized machine.
And what of the girl.
Although these stories are more than 60 years old, they still stand out as signature reads of the spy/adventure genre. ( )

10 of the Greatest Cold War Spy Novels
“Though Ian Fleming himself had worked in intelligence during the Second World War, James Bond was a fantasy figure in the tradition of Bulldog Drummond, the Saint, and Mike Hammer, and Fu Manchu provided the pattern for Bond’s uber-foes (specifically, in the case of Dr. No, 1962). But in this, his fifth Bond novel, Fleming plays a straight espionage game, with Russia’s counter-intelligence agency SMERSH out to kill Bond in the context of a contrived sexual scandal. The first section of the novel depicts the planning of the mission and the training of Soviet assassin Red Grant. The 1963 film version with Sean Connery is the most faithful of Bond adaptations, rivaled only by On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) and Casino Royale (2006).”
