I really enjoyed this novel based on a the true story of a very tragic occurrence. This was a story I was not familiar with and enjoyed the fact based fiction. I was pulled in from page one and did not want to stop reading. I would recommend to anyone that enjoys a great historical fiction. ( )

This is such a touching story, made even more so since it is loosely based on the true story of Georgia Tann, the Director of a Tennessee adoption agency who stole children from the poor and then sold them to wealthy individuals. Though the story is fictional, it was still very powerful. The author did an outstanding job of showing how the kidnapped children must have felt being ripped from their parents. The voice she gave to Rill was incredible.

You can't help but be moved by this story. I gritted my teeth while reading this book. Humans never cease to amaze me in what harm they can afflict on others. Not an easy read; nevertheless, it was outstanding. ( )

Amazingly sad and amazingly gripping are the best words I can think of to describe this book. I was not quite sure it would live up to the hype I was hearing. The surprise was on me because it more than lived up to the hype. This is definitely in my top 10 list of all time favorites.
The sacrifices made by almost every character are so believably real that you can feel their pain. I don’t feel it was just one thing or even the fact that it was based on a true story but the overwhelming feeling of helplessness was quite overpowering especially when it comes in the form of the written word.

synopsis (from author's website):

Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family’s Mississippi River shantyboat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge—until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage, the Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents—but they quickly realize the dark truth. At the mercy of the facility’s cruel director, Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together in a world of danger and uncertainty.

Aiken, South Carolina, present day. Born into wealth and privilege, Avery Stafford seems to have it all: a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a handsome fiancé, and a lavish wedding on the horizon. But when Avery returns home to help her father weather a health crisis, a chance encounter leaves her with uncomfortable questions and compels her to take a journey through her family’s long-hidden history, on a path that will ultimately lead either to devastation or to redemption.

Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country—Lisa Wingate’s riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong.

"Did you know that in this land of the free and home of the brave there is a great baby market? And the securities which change hands...are not mere engraved slips of paper promising certain financial dividends, but live, kicking, flesh-and-blood babies."  ---FROM THE ARTICLE "THE BABY MARKET, The Saturday Evening Post, February 1, 1930
"They are, [Georgia Tann] said repeatedly, blank slates. They are born untainted, and if you adopt them at an early age and surround them with beauty and culture, they will become anything you wish them to be."  ---BARBARA BISANTZ RAYMOND, The Baby Thief

It's funny how what you're used to seems like it's right even if it's bad.
Life is not unlike cinema.  Each scene has its own music, and the music is created for the scene, woven to it in ways we do not understand.  No matter how much we love the melody of a bygone day or imagine the song of a future one, we must dance within the music of today, or we will always be out of step, stumbling around in something that doesn't suit the moment.
I have to be close to my sister, We've been stitched together at the heart since she was born.
In my multifold years of life, I have learned that most people get along as best as they can. They don't intend to hurt anyone. It is merely a terrible by-product of surviving.
The names of old friends and acquaintances she can often recall with ease. It's as if her memory book has fallen open, a persistent wind tearing out the most recent pages first. The older the memories are, the more likely they are to remain intact.
