"A generations-spanning family of psychics--both blessed and burdened by their abilities--must use their powers to save themselves from the CIA, the local mafia, and a skeptic hell-bent on discrediting them in this hilarious, tender, magical novel about the invisible forces that bind us. The Telemachus family is known for performing inexplicable feats on talk shows and late-night television. Teddy, a master conman, heads up a clan who possess gifts he only fakes: there's Maureen, who can astral project; Irene, the human lie detector; Frankie, gifted with telekinesis; and Buddy, the clairvoyant. But when, one night, the magic fails to materialize, the family withdraws to Chicago where they live in shame for years. Until: As they find themselves facing a troika of threats (CIA, mafia, unrelenting skeptic), Matty, grandson of the family patriarch, discovers a bit of the old Telemachus magic in himself. Now, they must put past obstacles behind them and unite like never before. But will it be enough to bring The Amazing Telemachus Family back to its amazing life?"--… (mais)

So disappointed -- I was looking forward to reading this so much. I made it to Page 62, but as I turned each page I was asking myself Why am I reading this? So I decided to give myself an early birthday present, and I'm kicking it to the curb.

What didn't like about it? A little hard to say. The words are all in the right order, they are all good words. There are characters, and they busily do character-y things, like masturbate, swear, etc etc. There seems to be a mystery: do the family members really have psychic powers, or is it all a scam? What really happened to the matriarch of the family, who died young, not long after their humiliation on national TV? But perhaps that's the problem: the words, the characters and the situation all feel a bit random, a bit by-the-numbers. (Sexually frustrated teenage boy, spying on his semi-clad teenage cousin! That's a good one! Randy old man, picking up lonely ladies at the supermarket! That'll work!)

In the immortal words of Chief Dan George ( Little Big Man, since you ask) "Sometimes the magic works, and sometimes it doesn't." ( )

The Amazing Telemachus Family were about to reach dizzying heights of fame and fortune in the 1970s, when a live television magic display went all wrong and they were revealed as nothing but tricksters. Now, two decades on the family are still dealing with the fall-out from what happened then. Only they weren't tricksters, they really do have powers, as Matty has just learned for himself with his astral projection.
Told from the viewpoint of the different family members; Teddy, a master conman, heads up a clan who possess gifts he only fakes: Irene, the human lie detector; Frankie, gifted with telekinesis; and Buddy, the clairvoyant, and the next generation is represented by Matty.
It's an interesting story. One I almost gave up on because I have this thing where I ignore chapter headings even when I know they are important and so had to keep double checking who exactly was telling the story. But that's my fault, not the books. Because really it is quite easy to tell who's narrating what, they all have their own quirks and mannerisms.
I picked this on up because Simon Mayo ((who I follow on account of wittertainment. Hello to Jason Isaacs)) tweeted about it when I was considering my next read. I guess I'm suggestible like that. So I requested it and it came in ((people of Ireland, use your libraries, the new request system is totes amazeballs)) and I read it. And I enjoyed it.
It isn't my usual sort of book, and I don't think I would have picked it up without that rec, but it is always good to try new things from time to time. How else will you learn what you like and don't like? It is an easy read, but not altogether a fluff read. It brings up plenty of interesting topics, how women end up having to do the heavy lifting in families ((see also Metafilter threads on emotional labour)) and what happens when you can see the future and it is something you don't want to happen. How do you deal with that when you know that if you've seen it *that* has to happen, but maybe some fuzzy things can be changed, and if they can how do you do that?
As I said, I quite liked this book, it was entertaining, humourous, and is worth a read.
It is also one of those books that shows how useless it is to categorise books by genre. It features a magical family, therefore it is fantasy. Only I wouldn't say that many bookshops or libraries ((if they have these sections)) would market it as such, it goes with the general fiction. And non-fantasy fans would have no problem reading and enjoying it, never once thinking that it might be a fantasy book, because they don't like that sort of thing :) Well, maybe they just don't like epic fantasy... after all, all fiction is fantasy when you think about it because it is all made up. Loved this book for its uniqueness and hilarity. The Amazing Telemachus family has psychic powers. Grandma Mo (deceased) is the real deal, but Grandpa Teddy is a first-class con man. Matty (Mathias) has just come into his own power -- out of body traveling, but he has to be stoned or aroused to do it. For a 14 year old boy, this is problematic. Matty's mother (single) Irene has the ability to tell if someone is lying -- also problematic for him. His uncle Frankie (telekinesis) is in money trouble with the mob and is grooming Matty to help him with a heist that will save his bacon, his marriage and his family and bizarre Uncle Buddy who can see the future, just not always clearly, is busy outfitting the house like a bomb shelter for some cataclysmic event he knows is coming, even though he is a little fuzzy on the details. A cast of secondary characters (Nick Jr. /Sr. the mobsters, Graciela, the wife/daughter-in-law, Smalls, the CIA goon, Archibald the family rival and others) add to the wackiness and drama. Set in 1995, the launch of the Internet (AOL!) plays a role and the location in the Western Suburbs of Chicago (Elmhurst, Oak Brook, LaGrange) was a big draw. Despite all the madcap action, there is genuine family love and loyalty, which is touching -- and always an angle. ( )

I've enjoyed all of Gregory's books up until this one. Yes, I stopped reading it, but only because I kept waiting for the payoff that didn't come soon enough. ( )

He launches us straight into the agreeably complex present-day web of the family, leaving us to puzzle out all the relationships. Then he delivers the backstory in segments throughout the novel (mimicking, one suspects, Buddy’s own flights of atemporality). Before too long, the reader is firmly in command of all the necessary material, and yet still experiencing many more revelations. It’s a technique that not every writer could pull off well, but Gregory does.

Of course, without great characters and emotionally resonant doings, this fancy format would be useless. But you can count on Gregory for those essential features as well. Every person in the book practically jumps off the page; the dialogue is often hilarious, and always pertinent and revelatory; and the amount of action is intense, including an occult heist à la Richard Kadrey’s latest thrillers.

Matty Telemachus sortit de son corps pour la première fois durant l'été 1995, à l'âge de quatorze ans ; il serait toutefois plus juste de dire que son corps l'expulsa et expédia sa conscience dans les airs sur un geyser de désir et de honte.
