"An electrifying novel about the primal and unyielding bond between a mother and her son, and the lengths she'll go to to protect him. The zoo is nearly empty as Joan and her four-year-old son soak up the last few moments of playtime. They are happy, and the day has been close to perfect. But what Joan sees as she hustles her son toward the exit gate minutes before closing time sends her sprinting back into the zoo, her child in her arms. And for the next three hours--the entire scope of the novel--she keeps on running. Suddenly, mother and son are as trapped as the animals. Joan's intimate knowledge of this place that filled early motherhood with happy diversions--the hidden pathways and under-renovation exhibits, the best spots on the carousel and overstocked snack machines--is all that keeps them a step ahead of danger. A masterful thrill ride and an exploration of motherhood itself--from its tender moments of grace to its savage power--Fierce Kingdom asks where the boundary is between our animal instinct to survive and our human duty to protect one another. For whom should a mother risk her life?"--… (mais)

Can't believe I finished this book, only to be left with a vague ending. One of my pet peeves; I understand that in real life, we often don't know what happened or why, or what is going to happen, but I hate it in books I read. I did not like this book, did not like the characters. I found both Joan and her son annoying, but kept reading, only to get to the end and be left with questions.

Of course, I know in every situation, we never know what we would actually do, but some of Joan's decisions just seemed ridiculous, especially when a point was frequently made about how she was thinking things through. Simply don't understand how this got so many good reviews. ( )

I was intrigued up until the point they left the porcupine exhibit. Everything felt rushed and I felt disconnected the entire time. I didn't find it fast-paced or thrilling at all. ( )

Honestly, the book started out decent, but quickly went downhill. It became very unbelievable that police could not get into the zoo, which is usually pretty open, to help the people inside. What really ruined it for me was the ending. Extremely disappointing with way too many loose ends. Sometimes when a book ends like that it's fun to Google different opinions. But in this case I really had no interest in reading anything else related to this book. ( )

A solid thriller, perfect to blast through in a power outage ( )

The plot of this novel is intriguing - a mother and young son are spending a day at the zoo when suddenly they are trapped by active shooters. It's an all too real tale and the author mixes the shock of bullets firing with the quiet terror of hiding with a small child. I'll go ahead and admit I didn't like the ending, but this is good book for those who enjoy suspense and thrillers. ( )
