So often, we exhaust ourselves and the planet in a search for very large pleasures - while all around us lies a wealth of small pleasures, which - if only we paid more attention - could daily bring us solace and joy at little cost and effort. But we need some encouragement to focus our gaze. This is a book to guide us to the best of life's small pleasures: everything from the distinctive delight of holding a child's hand to the enjoyment of disagreeing with someone to the joy of the evening sky; an intriguing, evocative mix of small pleasures that will heighten our senses and return us to the world with new-found excitement and enthusiasm.… (mais)

This book was obviously designed to be a gift book. It is a well-done package, hardcover, banded, nice thick paper stock, and a color photo with each of its 52 essays about the little things that keep us happy and moving through life. As with any book of lists, some are golden, most agreeable, and some just a pain and totally off base. For me it started with Fish Shops and a picture of whole fish spread out on ice, with their eyes looking straight at the reader. [Yeah, I have a thing about dead fish with their heads.] I found this just creepy and the price I paid for just flipping the book open to a random FISH page.

Things looked up from there, with small pleasures such as: the first day of feeling well after a sickness, holding a small child’s hand, sunbathing, being up late at night, the charm of cows (?), staring out the window, and so many more. All these choices were followed by me pondering what choices my late wife would have picked. I would have found her picks extremely telling and fascinating, and she would have seen mine as odd, yet predictable.

I see the concept of a book like this, is to remind the reader that life is not completely about the big moments that change the course of our lives, but it is so much more about the small, quiet moments that bring you such comfort, warm your heart, and bring a smile to your face. The book is almost wordlessly pleading with you to start creating your own list. Personally, I find that most every small pleasure I have in my life as a widower, is a memory of my life with my lady. Kleine genoegens door The School Of Life
